Directed by Chris Columbus and released in November 2001, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" ("Philosopher's Stone" in the UK) would go on to become one of the year's biggest hits. (It grossed just under a BILLION dollars worldwide!) Here we're introduced to an affable young lad named Harry Potter, an orphan who lives under the stairs in the home of his exceedingly unpleasant Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. But when a deluge of magical letters addressed to Harry begins to fill the house on his eleventh birthday, Harry begins to learn his true self-worth: He's not only a wizard, but also one of the most famous and potentially powerful wizards ever born!
Going against the wishes of his selfish and ignorant guardians, Harry makes his way to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with the help of a hulking giant named Hagrid. Like most new kids, Harry's more than a little nervous about his new surroundings, but finds fast friends with fellow first-year students, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Ron proves to be a loyal friend who can be clever in a pinch.
Hermione, on the other hand, is a know-it-all who enjoys telling everyone how smart she is, but she's someone who can back up her talk. As Harry begins the school year, he begins to learn more about himself and his parents and his fated confrontation with the one responsible for the scar on his forehead and his parents' deaths. Voldemort. Armed with this new knowledge, Harry decides to become the best wizard he can be... but before that, he has to deal with the rigors of school and Professor Severus Snape, the sinister looking teacher of potions who may or may not be out to get Harry.
