Welcome to Comix Worst to Best
By Jeff Giles
Let's be frank: comic books haven't had what you'd call an illustrious (groan) history onscreen. Until recently, the genre has yielded more than its share of duds -- "Judge Dredd," anyone? -- although many have proven to exceed our lofty hopes and expectations. With that in mind, we've once again broken out the trusty Tomatometer, set the dial for "comic goodness," and assembled a list of every comic book movie ever adapted from the pulpy pages of your favorite comic books, graphic novels, and syndicated strips. That's right, we've got all 94 of 'em, ranked from the absolute worst big-screen adaptations to the best-reviewed!
You'll find the usual suspects: caped crusaders, a web-slinging wall-crawler (with "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2" both in the top five), scrappy mutants, and a few surprises, too; some of the most critically beloved films in recent memory have been adapted from the funny pages, including a few whose hand-drawn origins you may not have suspected (like "American Splendor" and "A History of Violence"). There's even room for a little Jean-Claude Van Damme and an intergalactic duck.
Unfortunately, you won't find the last few pages of the list loaded with ads for X-ray glasses and home muscle-building kits, but we think you'll agree that the Tomatometer has done it again. So what are you waiting for? Remove the protective plastic bag, flip to the first page, and get acquainted with Rotten Tomatoes' Comix Worst To Best Countdown!
