"With great power comes great responsibility." It's a line familiar to longtime fans of the Spider-Man comics, but an ideal realized by sequel filmmakers with depressing rarity; anybody who wasn't at least a little nervous that "Spider-Man 2" might not live up to the standard set by its predecessor was probably either an incurable optimist or not a fan. Happily, critics were even more impressed with the sequel, and for good reason -- "Spider-Man 2" takes everything that audiences loved about the first installment and adds more (more action! more character development! more angst!). Hardcore fans may have quibbles with the compression of certain storylines from the comics, or Spider-Man's repeated unmasking, but from a cinematic standpoint, "Spider-Man 2" builds on the successes of its predecessor by almost any meaningful standard.
Boasting an entertaining villain and deeper emotional focus, this is a nimble sequel that improves upon the original.
