Editor's Note
To some readers, this film's inclusion on this list might come as something of a surprise. Not because Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind isn't a science fiction movie, but because its sci-fi component, though crucial to the story, is almost incidental; really, it's a love story that happens to take place within a science fiction framework. That framework is delightfully strange, and Byzantine enough to render short explanations of the film an almost impossible proposition, but suffice it to say that director Michel Gondry's career masterpiece (so far) is about love's power to conquer questionable dye jobs, doctor-administered memory loss, and the creepy machinations of Elijah Wood. Unless it isn't, in which case it's still one of 2004's best films, and one worth seeking out regardless of your preconceived notions about sci-fi.
