Welcome to Top Sports Movies

By Jeff Giles

April. It's a time when the thoughts of young men and women… and old men and women… Heck, pretty much every conceivable demographic has sports on the brain. The NCAA tournament just wrapped up, baseball season is underway, the NBA and NHL playoffs are approaching, and your recreational beer league is in full swing.

That's where this month's feature comes in: With the trusty Tomatometer as our guide, we've suited up the best-reviewed films about the go-to sports (football, baseball, basketball) and the not-so-usual players (cricket, bowling, wheelchair rugby). Executed correctly, a sports film encapsulates everything we love about going to the movies; in perhaps no other genre can action, comedy, drama, and romance co-exist so comfortably. If it involves inspired physical activity, digging deep and relying on a teammate or two, and is worthy of un-ironic repeat viewing, chances are it's one of the 53 movies on this list. (Yes, 53. Think of it as a tribute to Artis Gilmore.)

So crack open a cold one, sit back in your favorite chair, and hide the remote -- we've got Olympic runners, crying in baseball, profane Little Leaguers, Californian governators, leg-sweeping, and a whole lotta Costner and Newman for you. (And yes, before you start chanting, "Rudy" made the list.) It's time to run down the list of Rotten Tomatoes' Best Reviewed Sports Movies!
