5 Big Laughs in HD

Want some surefire comedies to add to your growing HD DVD collection? From Bill Murray in "Caddyshack" to Jim Belushi in "Animal House, " these classic picks have some of the most memorable scenes and characters from American comedy to date…and they're all available in High Definition!

Blazing Saddles
Released in 1974, "Blazing Saddles" was the "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun" of its time. Writer/director Mel Brooks threw everything but the kitchen sink into this parody of Hollywood westerns. The result was one of the most successful comedies of the early 1970s. Some of the jokes may seem tame by today's standards, but at the time of its release "Blazing Saddles" was cutting edge, and it still has bite. Stars Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, and Cleavon Little offer comedy gold. At 94 percent on the Tomatometer, "Blazing Saddles" scores one of the highest ratings for a Mel Brooks movie.

Release Date: May 23, 2006
Starring: Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Cleavon Little

National Lampoon's Animal House
When comedy magic happens, it's a wonderful thing. And director John Landis's 1978 smash hit "Animal House" is comedy magic. After Dean Wormer -- played with authoritative menace by John Vernon -- puts the infamous Delta House on "double secret probation," the fraternity brothers figure their party is over. So what do they do? They strike back with a last hurrah Faber College will never forget. John Belushi as Bluto delivers the quintessential party animal, and the movie's music christened the songs "Louie Louie" and "Shout" as frat party standards. "Animal House" grades a 86 percent on the Tomatometer.

Release Date: August 08, 2006
Starring: John Belushi, Tim Matheson, Tom Hulce

Caddyshack
One of the most-quoted comedies of all time comes to HD DVD: "Caddyshack," released in 1980, follows the Bushwood Country Club's caddies as they compete with for the best tips while plotting to stick it to the rich. Stars Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight turn in career-defining performances. However, Bill Murray steals the show as Carl Spackler, the club's maniacal, gopher-hunting groundskeeper. Sure, you've probably seen "Caddyshack" a few times (and memorized the best quotes), but in HD, the muppety gopher groovin' to Kenny Loggin's "I'm Alright" is all the more amusing.

Release Date: August 22, 2006
Starring: Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, Ted Knight
Directed by: Harold Ramis

Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Of all the 1980s high school movies, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was just…better. Mind you, it was made before John Hughes tapped the genre, and more than a dozen years before Kevin Smith's "Mallrats." Cameron Crowe wrote "Fast Times" based on the real-life experiences of students at a Southern California high school, and director Amy Heckerling turned it into a celluloid classic. Sean Penn plays the unforgettable, and perpetually stoned, Jeff Spicoli, leading a cadre of future stars including Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage, Forest Whitaker, Anthony Edwards, and Eric Stoltz. It scores a gnarley 84 percent on the Tomatometer.

Release Date: October 10, 2006
Starring: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold
Directed by: Amy Heckerling

A Christmas Story
Author Jean Shepherd narrates this nostalgic (and hysterical) remembrance of a 1940s Christmas in his hometown of Hammond, Indiana. Based on adventures gathered from his book "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash," "A Christmas Story" follows Shepherd's young alter-ego, Ralphie (played by Peter Billingsley), on his quest to acquire the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts -- a genuine, pump-action, Red Ryder BB gun. The beauty of "A Christmas Story" is its casting. Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin are wonderful as Ralphie's parents. And Ralphie's trip to a department store to ask Santa for the gun is, of course, unforgettable. Beware of the Bumpuses' hounds!

Release Date: December 05, 2006
Starring: Darren McGavin, Melinda Dillon, Peter Billingsley
Directed by: Bob Clark
