Movies to Get You Started

Movies on HD DVD have only been on the market for a couple months, so the pickings will be slim. The selection will improve as times goes on, but in the mean time, here are a couple of gems to get your HD DVD library started. The titles here both show off what the format is capable of and are compelling movies in their own right.

Serenity
Largely overlooked by the general public save for fans of "Firefly," the short-lived TV series on which it's based, "Serenity" is a more involving movie than whatever is coming from George Lucas these days. A somber yet tongue-in-cheek sci-fi actioner, "Serenity" didn't lose anything in its jump to the big screen; the witty banter and memorable characters from the show are all present and accounted for. The good news is, if you dig "Serenity" (with its 81 percent Tomatometer), you can go back and watch the TV series on DVD.

Apollo 13
"Apollo 13" is one of those movies that is meant to be seen on the largest screen possible. Director Ron Howard's magnum opus, "Apollo 13" is the gripping retelling of the ill-fated 1970 mission to the moon that skirted disaster when an oxygen tank exploded on board. The people back at Mission Control must use all the resources available to them in a race against time to bring the three astronauts back before oxygen runs out. Failure is not an option. Tom Hanks heads an all-star cast that includes Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Bill Paxton; the ensemble effort garnered nine Oscar nominations and 97 percent on the Tomatometer.

Full Metal Jacket
An unforgettable anti-war movie from one of cinema's masters, "Full Metal Jacket" is a movie split right in the middle. The film, set during the Vietnam War, consists of two distinct halves that are so different they feel like two separate movies. The first part shows the indoctrination Marine trainees go through as they are molded into killing machines; thereafter, the film departs for battle. Directed by the late Stanley Kubrick, "Full Metal Jacket" is Certified Fresh at 98 percent on the Tomatometer and is essential viewing for fans of cinema.

Release Date: May 16, 2006
Starring: Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, R. Lee Ermey
Directed by: Stanley Kubrick

The Perfect Storm
If you want to see awesome water effects, "The Perfect Storm" is the movie to get. The story -- tiny boat meets big storm -- while serviceable, is so thin that you're excused if you think the movie is nothing more than a showcase for the special effects. Still, those effects have enough of a "Wow!" factor to make a case for the movie as a whole. George Clooney is fishing boat captain Billy Tyne who, along with his rag tag crew, end up catching the big one. Diane Lane is criminally under-used as Mark Wahlberg's girlfriend.

Release Date: June 06, 2006
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, Diane Lane
Directed by: Wolfgang Petersen

King Kong
Peter Jackson follows the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy with this remake of the 1933 classic. The stop-motion puppets of the original are gone, but their CG stand-ins are more than adequate replacements. While the movie could have used some trims to its three hour-plus running time, Jackson's film is a breathtaking and an imaginative take on old material, and scored a strong 84 percent on the Tomatometer. Undoubtedly, "King Kong" will look grand on HD DVD.
