Film making as a career?

Hi there

Is there anyone who is currently in the film making industry that can give me any advice?

Im finishing school this year and have been leaning towards getting into that area, either producing, directing or editing.

What are the ups and downs of this bussiness?
Is the pay good?, and is having a career in this field likely?
What are the best courses to do when studying film, and how long?

The more anyone can tell me the better.
Thanx :)

Hey people!

Do you guys agree/disagree that avid movie-lovers would neccessarily make good film directors/producers? Personally, I think that watching movies is just for enjoyment, but to study a film, one would have to go beyond just watching a movie and think deeply about it. Hence I guess avid movie-lovers would not necessarily make good film directors/producers, because film appreciation is a skill, and is not the same as just watching a movie. What do you guys think? =)

Oh, I would agree! When I see movies with some of my pals, I always chuckle when one of them starts complaining about parts of the film and how they could have done it better. Now, no doubt, they have a rough sketch in their mind about how to change a scene, but if you were to actually put them on the shoot, they would have no idea of where to even begin to get that shot in their head.

Also, film appreciation is not all it takes to make a good movie (I doubt that is what you were getting across, just covering the bases ;) ). If that were the case then why don't we see many of the big-name critics making their own material? Simply, because they don't know how to work from the technical side of things. Shot placement, blocking, minor background details, etc. would completely befuddle most of them and then you would have a very "rough" movie that could be very unwatchable. *cough* majority of YouTube content *cough* (though their are some great gems there too)

Bubba Ho Tep is one of those film where just its title makes you go ... "Hmmmm, what can this be about? And do I really want to see it?".

Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis both do an awesome job as two old men wasting away in a Texas retirement home. Although the film is low budget (under a millionish, I think) it looks fairly good and adaquately achieves a very dark, unnerving tone to it. A little drawn out in some parts by dir Don Coscarelli, this film still has it; great actors, a solid score, and a decent script full of dark dark humor and an evil foe to fight. Not as good as Shaun of Dead or Army of Darkness but easily just as fun and absurd in that wierd sort of way. Check this film out if your in need of "something different", unique and just plain odd.

why does everyone have such strange call names. Are people really afraid of revealing themselves ? If your making movies revealing one self is part and parcel of the gameboy. I'd rather watch a film by algis kemezys than Squirt Values...

Howdy,

I'm Harpo and I'm a film lover. I recently graduated from film school. I'm just looking to write about great cinema, share my thoughts and opinions and connect with some cinema lovers out there. My interests cover all aspects of film from art house Euro cinema to whatever is being cranked out of Hollywood -- although my main preference is the low-no budget art house scene.
