'Underground' gets better on a re-watch. At least it did for me.

Underground is unique and transcendent. The set-up is brilliant. The execution is brilliant. The fear and igorance of the characters is natural and well-conveyed. The humor and absurdity is tasteful, disturbing, and brilliant. The moments of catharsis and heartbreak are organic to the story and compelling. The final sequence is brilliant.

Days and Nights in the Forest (Satyajit Ray, 1970)

Although Satyajit Ray is a fairly well-known director, he has made so many films that it is difficult to know which ones to look out for. Hence I recommend 'Days and Nights in the Forest' as one of his best. Four men go on holiday together for a week, and they act as four men on holiday would.

I haven't seen any Satyajit Ray. I'm ashamed. Gotta figure out where to start and bust my cherry.

Fanfan la Tulipe (1952) and Mafioso (1962)

Let's forget the remake of Fanfan la Tulipe and talk about the 1952 version. Fanfan la Tulipe is a 'swashbuckler, romantic comedy' set during the French revolution. Filmed in 1952, the film was a great success in French cinema which then coined the years of swashbuckler classics. The film revolves around a central character 'Fanfan la Tulipe' who has himself a reputation, not just for being a noisy and boastful swordsman (a swashbuckler) but the audience also gets the impression very early on in the film that he is somewhat of a hit with the ladies. This is then emphasised a couple of minutes into the film, when he alludes himself into thinking that he will marry the King's daughter. Fanfan la Tulipe is a very liberal character who rarely abides by the rule of others, and instead chooses to do his own thing.

The film does not leave any long lasting impression on one's mind after you have seen it, but all in all it is a very easy film to watch. The not so subtle wit from nearly all the characters, and the unperturbed nature of Fanfan La Tulipe (even in the most difficult of situations) help to make this film the unchallenging piece of cinema that it is. It is entertaining enough for a Friday Night movie with movie buffs!

In Mafioso by Alberto Lattuada, a factory efficiency expert decides to take his family on a nostalgic vacation to the small town in Sicily where he grew up. Big mistake. He quickly becomes embroiled with the local Mafia, who see him as the perfect candidate to take care of a little job for them in America. Long before THE GODFATHER or THE SOPRANOS, Alberto Lattuada made this tragicomedy about Mob life. Between this and SEDUCED AND ABANDONED, one gets the impression that Sicily in the early sixties was an outer circle in Dante's Inferno. Shot in glorious black and white on location. A forgotten gem, recently restored. Note to foodies: there are several terrific meals in this movie. You may not live long in the Mafia, but you'll dine well.

Feel free to comment on these two or the earlier two movies!

'Mafioso' is neat. I'm scared to watch 'Fanfan la Tulipe', even the DVD cover worries me.

This forum is sure going to have a lot of posts! Let's get the ball rolling with four great movies.

First movie is a TV movie series called "Marco Polo" (1982). I was first attracted to it by Morricone's fabulous score, and the few comments on IMDB and Amazon that highly recommended it. It's one of the few highly rated TV series not available on DVD, and I was one of the lucky few to get my hands on it! It is a wondrous work of art; a beautiful piece of story-telling based on this medieval traveler's experiences as he followed the silk route caravans deep into Persia, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and reaching China.

It's always good to see cameo performances by established stars and this version of a historical wonder-man is no exception (Gielgud, Bancroft, McShane, Lancaster, to name a few). The over-all casting deserves high marks, especially the role of Marco (young and older). Filled with humor, pathos, excitement, and welcomed verisimilitude, this is a series that deserves to be re-run.

2nd movie is Hakuchi (1951) by Kurosawa, based on an adaptation Dostoevsky's novel "The Idiot." Kurosawa modernizes the story and moves it from Russia in summer to Hokkaido in winter. The great Russian director Grigori Kozintsev thought this film captured the spirit of the novel remarkably well -- and who am I to disagree. I seriously wonder whether someone unfamiliar with the novel could follow this film, in its currently disjointed state -- but for those who know and love Dostoevsky's story (and characters), this film is a delight and a revelation. By and large, the actors do a remarkable job of capturing the essence of Dostoevsky's cast. I recently also saw an otherwise fine Russian version of "Crime and Punishment", which failed to capture the richness of tone of the novel, missing every trace of any sort of humor (an essential element of the book). Kurosawa, on the other hand, managed to ricochet from melodrama to humor to tragedy without missing a beat -- sometimes within the bounds of a single shot. Frankly, I never would have thought this possible. Another interesting facet of the direction here -- this often looked more like a silent film from the 20s or 30s than a film of the 50s.

2nd topic would contain the later two movies!

I like the Kurosawa, although I'm still not a huge fan of his films. I shall keep 'Marco Polo' in mind.

Let us begin with a personal favourite of mine. 'Morning Patrol' is a very moving post-apocalyptic sci-fi film, with an evocative, dream-like aesthetic that you will surely lose yourself in.

My full review can be read here: http://monoursblanc.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/morning-patrol-nikos-nikolaidis-1987/

Has anyone else seen this?

I've seen the trailer, and the melancholic palette is enticing. Greek cinema is relatively unexplored territory for me. Look forward to seeing it soon.

Excellent choice, I love this film. Visually, it's a monument of cinema, even though I watched it on a VHS rip. You have just motivated me to download a better rip and rewatch it!
