Hi, y'all! I'm new to this group, and happy to announce that FINAlLY, my guy D and I release our very first and, indeed, quite SWEET and remarkably high-quality, fine and lovely and rawwwther veddy veddy witty, much-anticipated, long-awaited creature-feature-length riff!

DogKnob presents The Trollenberg Terror (aka The Crawling Eye)!

This 1958 CLASSIC b-rate sci-fi/horror/thriller, set high in the sinister Swiss Alps, where the air is fresh and the cheese is free and the Crawling Eyeballs from Outer Space seem to be geting EXTREMELY irritable for some reason lately, is the very SAME film that MST3K chose as THEIR very first riff ever!

So we just used all their lines... the way we see it, NO ONE will EVER notice!

Yes indeed, it is the VERY SAME RIFF!--except mit PIE!

OK, all seriousness aside... it's an original riff, it's really funny in one or two spots, we believe--and it's only a bit naughty, actually; I mean, it's just the RIGHT amount of naughtiness...

Because we here at Dogknob KNOW how to use naughtiness skillfully and sparingly, like a spice; we like to fancy ourselves master chefs who have crafted a clever confection for the amusement and delight of the cuddly befuddled masses, who yearn for something OTHER, something DIFFERENT, something NEW and FRESH and EXCITING!...

And here at DogKnob Laboratories, We're Making The Future Funnier!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, within this AMAZING VIDEO PRESENTATION you'll find SEX n' DAMES (TWINS!) n' DRUGS n' ROCK N' ROLL! There's ALIEN EYEBALLS from OUTER SPACE, there's REALLY BAD high opera (high being the key word here) and a HELLUVA lotta SWEET SWISS SHIZZLE goes up in smoke as the world TREMBLES in the balance!...

And best of all, absolutely NO pictures, or even the most minor mention, of Britney Spears' Vagina! That's RIGHT! This riff is GUARANTEED TOTALLY BSV-FREE!!!

So come join Forrest Tucker and friends, and D and me, HIGH in the Swiss Alps, for an Eyeball-Palooza of sneaky freaky creepy-crawly Britney-Spears'-Vagina-less FUN!

Or just check out the sample trailers; that's pretty good fun too!
(There are 6 different ones in all, including a lil' music video and the Shizzle Clip!)

We'd sure appreciate any input!
Enjoy!

Danielle

I love horror/suspense movies, but my guiltiest pleasure is the genre of Creature Features. I am partial to them, no matter how cheesy. I'm always looking for more to watch and I'm going to start writing one of my own. Name your favorite Monster Movies.

I used to think that, and still get pissed at all the shitty ones that come out every year, but I have found a few good ones that give me hope. Here's some that should wipe out at least some of your cynicism:

28 Days Later, Drag Me to Hell, Let the Right One In, Cabin Fever, Hostel, The Descent, High Tension. The Hills Have Eyes Remake (1 & 2), the Host, and Fincher's Zodiac walks the line between being horror and being a suspense/thriller, either way that's one of the most well-made and truly frightening films I've seen in a long time.

Hey thanks for the list.I didn't notice i was being so cynical but I was just merely ranting about the horror moies that keep coming out these days. I actually have a list of horror movies Ide like to watch, and ide like add soem of those to it! Ive actually watched 28 days later..and I thought it was alright. Ive watched Hostel and The Hills Have Eyes as well, and the suspense was pretty good, but honestly they were both a bit too gory for me, and Im not scared of blood or anything, but I think its because of the different tastes everyone has in movies. I think im more classic thriller, with just the right amount of blood, nothing extreme, like heads unnecessarily getting chopped off. You know what I mean? Oh but I completely agree with you about Zodiac! That was a great movie. I watched both the old and new versions!

Steven G. is right. There are definitely some great modern horror movies out there, I just think you may have to look harder for them because hollywood is churning out more crap than ever and the good horror movies sometimes get lost in the mix, and often end up going straight to DVD.

There are some real good current movies now, but I didn't grow up in the 50s or 70s or whatever so can you imagine how many terrible horror movies came out in those times as well? We don't get to hear about the bad ones, only the masterpeices that came from the older eras.

PG-13 Horror Movies...WTF?!?!

I hate the latest remake phase Hollywood has pushed on horror fans lately but what I hate even more is the fact that some of these remakes are actually rated PG-13.

Any rated PG-13 horror movie is on my crap list but to take a good rated R horror movie from the 80s and turn it into a rated PG-13 remake is un-effin-believable.

Not all rated PG-13 horror movies are awful but as a rule, I will not see these movies in the theater. I may rent them once they are released to dvd but I refuse to see a rated PG-13 horror movie in the theater. Why? Because the more money a movie makes, the more likely Hollywood will try to copy that movie to get more success. In other words, if rated PG-13 horror movies bring in the big bucks, pretty soon every horror movie will be PG-13.

My question to everyone is: Do the rating of a horror movie influence your thoughts on that movie?

Meeley Man

Meeley Man on 9/8/09 at 4:18 PM

Yeah, the rating does affect my desire to see the film, to some degree. A ture horror, IMO, usually needs to be a Rated-R affair. Most PG-13 movies in general are simply watered down R-films. Like it knows it should go that extra step, but the studio is more worried about filling seats, than making a good product.

In the case of horror films it is even worse. And as a general rule, I'm not very keen on remakes of any kind (be they lower rated than the original or not), because they almost always remake a good (or great) film. That makes no sense to me. If you want to remake films, remake BAD ones, as you might make it something worth watching. But a good film doesn't need to be remade... it's already good! And horror remakes today are the absolute pits. The worst of the worst.

So, depending on the genre of the film, the rating (and if it is a remake) will certainly influence my desire to see it (or rent it).

I totally agree with the rating of pg-13 movies. It deystroys the sense of reality and lot of horror movies could be better if they were more violent or darker. To truly scare and entertain a horror fan by being pg-13 takes gut and lots of craft. You need to do it right. So considered this would you see The Ring which was PG-13 and it was scary,or that godawfull remake of Prom Night that was pg-13

1 Reply Report to Moderator

Phil F.

Phil F. on 9/26/09 at 2:52 AM

Personally, I didn't think The Ring was scary but I know a lot of people did. As for the Prom Night remake, that is one of the main movies I point to for defense of my PG-13 horror movie theory. The killer would stab someone and there would be NO BLOOD on his knife. Also, there would be no rip in the dress where he stabbed the person.

I can admit, there are a *few* good PG-13 horror movies. For me, one of them is the remake of "When A Stranger Calls".

I don't really see anything wrong with a PG-13 horror movie. You don't need to have a lot of blood and violence to be a horror movie. Look at Drage Me To Hell. Thats one of my favorite horror movies and it didn't need to realize on blood and gore.

A rating of a horror movie doesn't influence me to see it. For me its the people who are making the movie. If they're good horror directors I wouldn't care if it was PG-13 or R.

0 Replies Report to Moderator

nbrush

nbrush on 11/9/09 at 12:26 PM

The only reason companies put a movie at PG13 is so that younger people who are not 17 years old can see the movie and it means bigger numbers at the box office. The problem is that I usually read about editors having to cut back on certain things to reach PG13.

Sometimes it works and I'm not saying that I need my horror movies to be drenched in blood, but I don't want a movie idea to be held back due to ratings. Have to limit amount of blood, foul language, etc. My general opinion is that it hurts the original vision of the movie and you're not seeing the movie at its best.

I'm sick of cheap Hollywood remakes of classic movies which should be left alone and Japanese movies which are much better made and scarier than their American counterparts. Why does Hollywood find it so hard to capture the the ingredients of a scary horror movie?

I'm not sure I can agree with you on this. Yes. Hollywood is in need of some kind of horror movie lesson, but the Japanese horror movies are not scarier, at least, I don't think so.
It seems Japanese horror films have one 'monster' and that is the long haired, usually wet looking, dead girl. Take the girl from "The Grudge" and compare her to the girl from "The Ring". It is the same girl lol.

For me, The French know their horror, take "High Tension" and "Inside" for example.

I agree- the japanese movies are begining to look the same. I'm kinda glad that the girl in the Ring didn't meow like the Grudge kid though.

They're usually about ghosts and twists at the end... I have another one- SHUTTER I beleive was a japanese movie. Very similar.
They seem better because they are different than we are used to seeing, but it'll get old quick. Nothing wrong with having some fun in horror movies like Americans do .. I don't need every movie to be a Psycho or Exorcist... I like watching Black Sheep or Jack Frost sometimes. B-rated horror is underappreciated.

Douglas, I have the answer for your question. The problem with American commercial movies is that they don't care about doing a good movies. They don't even make the effort to create a good story. All they do is a good trailer and they know everybody will watch it in the theatres and they make a lot of movie just with that! Movies is America are all controled by Money. If you want to find good horror movies, just do some researches on the internet. You can have a lot of surprises! If you want some good American movies, watch: end of the line, pontypool, drag me to hell, Mulberry street. But you're wrong on one thing, Japanesse of not the only ones who do great horror movies (even tough they are the best), look for French horror movies (they are gore!) like frontier(s), Martyr, Inside, high tension. Look aslo for Spanish movies like REC and the Orphanage.

Japanese horror movies, at least the good ones like Ju-on or the Tomie series succeed in being very scary by using bizarre images and concepts not seen so much in American horror. These films are often more surrealistic, and follow fewer rules, which can make for very scary scenes, but can also lead to inconsistent films without story integrity. Ju-on was nothing but a series of scary images, without much of a story, but the images were so inspired and creative that it worked to make a great film, perhaps because it didn't bother with a story. Its all about inspiration. Whatever country a horror film comes from, if there is no inspiration behind it, it's not going to be good, just like any of these remakes or "re-imaginings" of old horror films, and foreign horror films coming out in America.

I think the reason why Hollywood tries to remake them is mainly for the people who don't know that they're remakes. To the people who don't know that they're remakes they will think that the movie is something original. Lets face it Hollywood hasn't really come out with anything original lately. Japanese movies, especially horror movies, are original and scary. Hollywood wants that since they can't make anything new that hasn't already been made.
