Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favorites too. Shane Black, the writer/director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, also wrote several other movies that take place during Christmas including Lethal Weapon and The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Another unrelated movie I like that takes place during Christmas is Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

Thanks man

I've heard about the Hollywood remake. It's called Let Me In (How retarded is that?). I'll fail epically I know it. To think people bag Bollywood all the time for ripping off foreign movies. Hollywood has been doin that since the 1950s! Just about every samurai movie was remade as a western and nowadays they rip off Asian horror movies, like Pulse, Shutter, The Ring, The Grudge, etc. (Most of them fail epically of course!)This shows an obvious lack of originality.

I haven't seen an of those movies you mentioned except for M (which was awesum!). I really wanna see Yojimbo but I live in an Australian country town and the video store is crap :P. I'll have to see some of these. I also wanna see Moon but the cinema just closed :( I hate my town more than ever now!

Well thanks for the comment anyways I hope you've seen my movies. You shall be enlightened

Ya, they rip off foreign movies when they run out of their own movies to ripoff! Halloween Version 2.2 anyone?

Jeez, don't you have Netflix in Oz? Internet is not very fast down there, but Netflix has massive selection of DVDs to choose from, and it's cheaper than renting videos. Sorry I don't want to sound like a commercial - I don't use it myself, but if you have no other choice...

Not sure the Amnerican version of Let the Right One In will be horrible. I read that the director Matt Reeves has spoken a lot to the author of the book, and it is going to be more of a re-adaptation of the book as opposed to the Swedish film.

It could still suck, but I respect the approach. Reeves directed Cloverfield, which was only about 52% bad, so I'd say for now that I'm looking forward to it.

Good. If Reeves makes his own version of the story, which acknowledges the fact that the original cannot be improved upon, then he may actually offer a compelling movie. Kind of like having the Burton and the Nolan Batman movies, both are good in their own way.

But if all he does is switch it from Swedish to English then he's a jackass!

Some great movies for me to check out in netflix. Thanks for the great thread.

Some of my favs that most maynot have heard of:

Super Inframan- this is from the 70s-80s and I used to love it when I was a kid. Kinda like a cooler version of Power Rangers (I hated the power rangers by the way), but very entertaining I think.

The Party- starring Peter Sellers- I'm sure this was big a few decades ago and not unknown to older viewers, but my grandfather put it on one day and I thought it was real funny. Kinda like a wackier and funnier version of bachelor party with Tom Hanks.

Arlington Road is a nice thriller with Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges- one of the better thrillers I've seen.

Beastmaster was a campy 80s movie- sort of like Conan the Barbarian, but has ferrets, who steal the show, and lots of wacky characters- so if you love 80s movies, this is awesome.

Donnie Darko was great. I'm sure most have heard of this, but a few friends at work never heard of it and after seeing it were glad I recommended it.

I can't think too much right now but there are lots more I'm sure.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Usually I stay away from the After Dark Horrorfest movies that come around every year, but "Autopsy" may be one of the best horror movies to come out in recent years. It's gory, funny, and takes a slick approach to the classic slasher formula! "Midnight Meat Train" is underrated in my opinion, too.

The Infallible Mr Jessop

The Infallible Mr Jessop on 10/16/09 at 9:14 AM

My friends aren't big horror movie buffs, so I've got a fair amount of material to work with here. Don't call this a definitive top ten, so much as a list of ten horror films I think are great but haven't had the chance to share with my friends...yet. If I have to tie the fuckers down and pull their eyelids apart, I will, damnit.

1. King of the Ants - Actually my favourite Stuart Gordon film, this is a grim black comedy about a would-be contract killer who goes completely nuts after his "employers" tie him up and spend a few days beating him about the head with a golf club. It's a better film than I make it sound.

2. Stuck - The other great Stuart Gordon black comedy, in which a drugged-up nurse accidentally crashes into a bloke recently made homeless; he gets embedded in the windscreen, and instead of driving to the hospital like a sensible person, she drives him into her garage, locks it up and waits for him to die.

3. Society - A Brian Yuzna film about a kid who's most paranoid fantasies prove to be absolute fact. In truth it's not the greatest film ever made - most it's fairly slow and not that engaging - but the opening credits sequence is creepy enough to get to even me, and the final fifteen-twenty minutes contain some of the most loving, glorious gross-out horror movies I've ever seen.

4. Bad Taste - I should point out that my friends are quite cineliterate, actually. They were genuinely interested in Let the Right One In, for example. It's not so much that they haven't heard of Bad Taste as that they will never ever watch it. As for me, it's my favourite horror comedy of all time, with the possible exception of the grossly underrated Cabin Fever.

5. Braindead - Of course. Not quite Bad Taste, but still a stone cold Peter Jackson classic. For the record, Meet the Feebles and the Frighteners are also good, and my other favourite Peter Jackson film is Heavenly Creatures.

6. Duel - Early Stephen Speilberg thriller and my favourite of all his films...unlesss I'm forgetting something, but I don't think I am. Basically, a bloke gets chased all over the desert by a huge fucking truck. Again, better than I make it sound - it's one of the most tense, nerve-shredding films I've ever seen. Also seems to be a big a influence behind one of my favourite films, The Hitcher.

1 Reply Report to Moderator

The Infallible Mr Jessop

The Infallible Mr Jessop on 10/16/09 at 9:54 AM

7. Black Christmas - Possibly the original holday-themed slasher, back before that was an accepted gimmick for struggling horror film-makers to utilise. It's essentially a murder mystery for the viewer, presented with a few stunning sequences and real flair. Not to be confused with the remake, which I've never seen and don't intend to.

8. Suicide Club - One of the most striking entries in the J-horror cannnnnnnon, and sadly obscure by the usual standard (I'll be honest, I don't think J-horror is much better than western horror, although right now, of course, they're basically the same thing). Not perfect, extremely uneven but trust me, it'll stay with you.

9. Hallowe'en III: Season of the Witch - aka the one nobody's seen. Okay, not the greatest film in the world, but the point is that the Hallowe'en series had a chance to go off in a different direction for each film, instead of just doing the Mike Myers story to death. But Season of the Witch was a flop, and so Mike Myers came back. Again and again. To the point of extreme tedium.

10. Dead Set - Not actually a film, but a TV series set in the Big Brother house during a zombie outbreak. It sounds daft - I avoided it for a long time - but it's actually my favourite Zombie-related thing ever, to the point that I'm willing to count it among the films. Seek it out - it's truly worth your time.

Oh, and cheers for the invite, Merlin.

Heh heh, well that's the danger with remakes. Technically not your fault, though. I blame the schools. Also, watching a remake can ruin the original for people who've never seen it, which is why I'm gutted about the proposed Oldboy remake.

Anyway, for the record (don't think I can edit the old comments here): King of the Ants (2003), Stuck (2007), Society (1989), Bad Taste (1987), Braindead (1992), Duel (1971, and apparently it was a TV movie...I didn't know that), Black Christmas (1974), Suicide Club (2007), Hallowe'en III: Season of the Witch (1982) and Dead Set (2008). Very good years, one and all.

When the Wind Blows is a British animation based on the events of cold war between Russia and the west.
We follow an elderly English couple that have moved to the country side after the male character retired.
One day the threat of nuclear war is upon Great Britain and the couple decide to prepare for the impending bomb that is going to hit London.

I haven´t seen Mononoke but Nauisicaa and the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky by Ghibli Studios are two amazing animated films that not many know.

I loved When The Wind Blows. Not to mention the soundtrack which is the best music Roger Waters has done after his departure from Pink Floyd. Genius!

Mine would have to be "The Boys Next Door." It's a film that, while dark at the time of the making of it (1985), has become even more relevent todat, in the wake of real life tragdeies, like Columbine and Virgina Tech. It's one of the earliest works of Charlie Sheen and one of the most underrated films by Penelope Spheeris. If you look at our world today, especially concerning violence among teens and young adults, this movie will be less a dark crime drama and more like a docudrama into the mind of teenage rage. I think it is an overlooked classic, which nearly none of my friends have even heard of or cares about.

Old boy is great , I heard Spilberg is doing a remake so in a few years it will surely be very popular and probably in the new version Spielberg will put some aliens in the end explaining all the story, the new version will surely suck.

Tae Guk Gi is awesome! On the French side - Delicatessen is another one that folks go "huh?" when you mention great foreign films.

At first it was Boondock Saints but that was 5 years ago... Id say the newest 3 would be Peter Jackson's Black Sheep, Equilibrium and SciFi/Ninja Movie Death Trance.

Some people I work with have never heard of The Brave with Johnny Depp/Marlon Brando and Project X with Matthew Broderick/Helen Hunt. They are not big movies, but interesting. JD plays a Native American down on his luck living in proverty and he's does anything to bring his family out of the situation. It isn't the greatest movie, but it is a good movie. Project X is about the Air Force doing experiments on monkey's and an officer risking his job and life to save them. Although I don't believe in experimenting on animals it is a good movie.

It's funny that you mention Pi because I've noticed that the general public is largely unaware of it though it has been rated thoroughly on Rotten Tomatoes. Aronofsky's subsequent three films - Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, and the Wrestler - seemed much more appreciated by audiences. Pi was incredible.

Gotta agree with that, thought Sunshine was superb - everyone was clueless when I recommended it. Another was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - one of my favourite movies. Surprised when people hadn't heard of it.

Peter Jackson's Dead-Alive comes to mind. I think the fact that it came from New Zealand turned off all of my friends, but when my cousin came into town from down south, I showed it to him immediately. Neither of us could stop laughing!

Except some very close friends...most other friends and co-workers haven't seen or heard of a majority of the films I could name. The most recent is "Prometheus Triumphant: A Fugue in the Key of Flesh". A great take on the classic Mary Shelly story, shot on digital video, but released on DVD with the format and look of an old silent film release. It was a fun viewing just because it was so different.
