It's a wide-ranging list, one that includes everything from hardball heroes (The Pride of the Yankees, Field of Dreams) to gridiron greats (Remember the Titans, Friday Night Lights). In addition, everything from surfing (Riding Giants) to golf (Caddyshack) to hockey (Slap Shot) to the sport of kings (Seabiscuit) is represented. Whatever your favorite athletic pursuit, you'll find something here to make you fire up the DVD player.

We know that sports movie fans are a passionate breed, and may have some questions about our methodology. In compiling this list, we used a weighted system that combined Tomatometer and the number of reviews. Every movie on this list has 20 reviews or more to ensure there was some critical weight behind every title (tough break, Endless Summer). We didn't include any films that didn't get a theatrical release (sorry, Brian's Song and 61*). We omitted films that we didn't feel were "sporty" enough (so no Strangers on a Train, Big Lebowski, or Match Point).
You may find that some of your sentimental favorites (and ours, including Hoosiers, Rudy, Rocky, or The Natural) are ranked lower than you might anticipate. It's kind of like a good relief pitcher: he may have a lower ERA than a starter, but he'll also get a lot fewer wins. Plus, the surprise entries are more than worth your time; we've got insightful documentaries and lesser-known dramas that will help you think about sports in a new way.

Without further ado, check out RT's Top Sports Movies and enjoy the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and everything in between.

TheMovieWhore writes: on Aug 08 2008 05:36 PM Can we get a list that has the fewest pages possible? One movie per page and your servers moving slow make it not worth the time to click through 75 pages. (Reply to this) |

PacingPete writes: on Aug 08 2008 06:59 PM Not sure I can agree with the top 10. Sports movies are so hard to classify. I absolutely loved Raging Bull but I'm not sure I would classify it as a sports movie, I felt as though the boxing was more of a backdrop to a bigger dramatic personal story. My favorite SPORTS movie of all time will forever be Hoosiers and I can't believe it didn't make the list until 24. (Reply to this) |

indiefilmfan2 writes: on Aug 08 2008 10:06 PM Does chess or poker count as a sport? They are on ESPN after all. If it is then where's Rounders or Searching for Bobby Fischer? The latter is at 100% and has more than the 20 review rule. (Reply to this) |

rucknrun writes: on Aug 09 2008 05:29 AM That list stinks. How is the Longest Yard and Slap Shot 57 and 58. Awful just awful. It is clear the good movies had more people reviewing them and hence a lower score. The obscure movies at the top were probably reviewed by 3 people. I can't express how horrible I think this list is. (Reply to this) |

bobproper writes: on Aug 11 2008 03:10 PM This list is bull****. You can't compare documentaries to movies side by side it's 2 different animals. Furthermore you should define what a sport is before starting, I love the hustler and color of money but don't consider pool a sport. Hoosiers, Rudy, The Natural, and Rocky aren't in the top 10. 3 of them aren't even in the top 20. Did you put this list together 15 minutes before the assignment was due? You guys have out done yourselves this time. Maybe you should watch the movies first. On a side not the manner you guys post these countdowns is infuriating! 1 HTML page load please, then find some other solution to go to the next content piece (ie. flash, DHTML, etc..). TANKBUSTA writes: on Aug 11 2008 05:07 PM In reply to this comment (#1971811) Ok after reading this list it appeals it was compiled by someone who was trying to act over educated by putting foreign movies and plenty of movies nobody has ever scene in their top 20. I skimmed most of this list, so if my comments are a bit wrong forgive me as I skipped to the top 20. Honestly all the Rocky's(excluding 5) are better than anything in the top 10. Whenever anyone watches Rocky it's because it's a classic against all odds movie with amazing training scenes. I also to this day love The Program and it's my favorite football movie of all time. I competed in College Track and Field...and many of the themes in that movie are right on...the steroids, alcoholism and wasting potential. Why is some indian movie and some movie about iraqi womens soccer even mentioned? Have more than 10 people actually viewed those? (Reply to this) |
