Twelve average New York males convene in a very small jury room on a very hot day in order to reach a verdict in a murder trial. Almost everyone wants to vote guilty and get on with their lives except for Juror No. 8 (Henry Fonda), a conscientious citizen who insists on establishing reasonable doubt. Arguments are made, cigarettes are smoked, murder weapons examined, diagrams drawn, and prejudices revealed. Firm opinions weaken and reverse; voices get raised, the clock ticks, and a ghetto kid's life hangs in the balance. Lumet's direction and camerawork steadily builds pressure into the plot. Things start out casual, but wind up so close and tight you can count the pores on the actors' noses. Fonda is good in a role well-suited to his extra-large sense of human dignity but the stealth giant in this actors dozen is the ferocious Lee J. Cobb. Jack Klugman, E.G. Marshall, Martin Balsam, Ed Begley, and Jack Warden play some of the other jurors, and a better assemblage of grizzled method actors shouting at each other won't likely come again. 12 ANGRY MEN was originally written for television, it is a true classic of the anti-McCarthy message era, and is not to be missed. Reviews for 12 Angry Men
12 Angry Men has some shrewd observations to sell about argumentation and group behavior, but they're not the ones of which the film seems most proud.
12 Angry Men (1957) is the gripping, penetrating, and engrossing examination of a diverse group of twelve jurors - all male, mostly middle-aged, white, and
This is a film where tension comes from personality conflict, dialogue and body language, not action.
Makes no self-saluting motions to greater importance, which gives the material the much-desired breathing room it needs to reach full potency.
Sidney Lumet's feature debut is a brilliant courtroom drama about the American jury system that deservedly was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Its superlative cast includes Henry Fonda, Martin Balsam, Ed Begley, Jack Warden, and E.G. Marshall.
Thoroughly engaging, there is nothing dated or corny in Reginald Rose’s intensely knowing screenplay and Lumet's energetic direction.
12 Angry Men ranks as the tautest courtroom drama you’ll ever see, surpassing Lumet’s very good 1982 drama, The Verdict.
In a time of bloated when special effects have become the real stars, going back to a classic like this can remind viewers what movie making is supposed to be about -- acting.
Mechanically written, but within its own middlebrow limitations, it delivers the goods.
A film with texture, humour and relevance at all times. All in 91 minutes.
A masterful work of debate and dialogue; of shifting momentum and the ideal of sticking to your scruples in the face of antagonistic groupthink.
While the composition of juries might change over time, the issues and attitudes that are explored here are timeless, as is this classic film.
Although it may sound ungallant, these 12 Angry Men, are all right without distaff glamour. Their dramas are powerful and provocative enough to keep a viewer spellbound.
