Is Factual Legitimacy a Legitimate Concern?

2001 came and went 12 years ago, and humanity has yet to step foot on anything past the moon. Although it would be the height of ignorance to suggest that the factual fallacies of the film have any impact on its cinematic value, do they call into question the existential value of the content / the legitimacy of the messages which the movie delivers?
