Critic Review - Washington Post

Now, seen in the actual 2001, it's less a visionary masterpiece than a crackpot Looney Tune, pretentious, abysmally slow, amateurishly acted and, above all, wrong.

Hunter is far from being right on "2001" but some of what he says in this quote rings true. Kubrick did make better films.

I agree, those that think this is the greatest movie ever were probably brainwashed ( la Alex in A Clockwork Orange) by the flashy lights and experimental audio.

so not liking the same film as you makes someone ignorant and childish?

No, not liking a film because it was "wrong" in the sense that it didn't turn out that way in real life makes one ignorant and childish.

No it's not ignorant and childish, he gave his reasons for why he didn't think the movie is good and I believe they are perfectly valid. And one of his points is that this movie was suppossed to capture what happened in 2001. Which it didn't but it was made in the 60's so the idea is that it will just happen in the future. Not a specific time or date the future. And I believe it is a visionary masterpiece to this day.

Although his review is misguided, you calling ignorant and childish in an attempt to boost yourself over him is almost worse. The fact is, it is completely and utterly irrelevant to say that the film is incorrect. The film was made in the 1960's so the idea is it will occur sometime in the future, kubrick is a filmmaker, not a scientist and even scientists are nearly always wrong in predictions. Yes the movie is slow paced at times but Kubrick never set out to be just an entertainer, but a visionary which was it this film is, a vision. And in that aspect, this film hasn't aged one day Hunter.

Granted that Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Godfather, and any number of other films are masterpieces, but why exactly is it necessary for a VISUAL masterpiece to have a plot? Have you ever seen Koyaanisqatsi? If not, you should. Some of us don't need no stinkin plot to appreciate art. We can make up our own plot, if we need one.

Why is it that people feel the need to push arbitrary film "classics" into comparison with any given film X? Casablanca and Citizen Kane might have a compelling plot, but they do not create the sense of utter wonder and vastness that this film so stunningly does. The fact that a certain Mr. Hunter failed to see the film's merits and called it pretentious is an irredeemable error in my opinion and is, above all, wrong.

actually, you're forgetting the Jupiter mission part of the movie, the rest of it is just a jigsaw puzzle for the truly intelligent, if you realize that kubrick hid the pieces in places that only minds as brilliant as his can find, you can piece it together completely.

Anything that doesn't involve a ten minute sequence of a spaceship pulling into a spaceport with classical music playing in the background. It reminded me of a two and a half hour wait at the doctor's office, but at least the doctor's office has magazines to keep you occupied.

Interesting to see you here Watcher- although I think this critic's little out burst was poorly spoken and not altogether true, he's still making a point that this film (when you look past its significance on todays Sci-Fi) is no longer "the greatest Sci-Fi ever made". He's right- it IS abysmally slow and pretentious. It's hype also preceeds it so highly that I had no choice but to be underwhelmed by it. :- S
