Now, seen in the actual 2001, it's less a visionary masterpiece than a crackpot Looney Tune, pretentious, abysmally slow, amateurishly acted and, above all, wrong.
Hunter is far from being right on "2001" but some of what he says in this quote rings true. Kubrick did make better films.
Mar 10 - 10:55 PM
I agree, those that think this is the greatest movie ever were probably brainwashed (à la Alex in A Clockwork Orange) by the flashy lights and experimental audio.
Dec 18 - 08:01 PM
Ignorant and childish analysis of one of the greatest films ever made
Mar 23 - 09:49 PM
so not liking the same film as you makes someone ignorant and childish?
Nov 20 - 05:38 PM
No, not liking a film because it was "wrong" in the sense that it didn't turn out that way in real life makes one ignorant and childish.
Jan 15 - 10:48 AM
Jun 9 - 09:04 AM
No it's not ignorant and childish, he gave his reasons for why he didn't think the movie is good and I believe they are perfectly valid. And one of his points is that this movie was suppossed to capture what happened in 2001. Which it didn't but it was made in the 60's so the idea is that it will just happen in the future. Not a specific time or date the future. And I believe it is a visionary masterpiece to this day.
Jun 11 - 07:31 AM
Aug 30 - 11:54 PM
Although his review is misguided, you calling ignorant and childish in an attempt to boost yourself over him is almost worse. The fact is, it is completely and utterly irrelevant to say that the film is incorrect. The film was made in the 1960's so the idea is it will occur sometime in the future, kubrick is a filmmaker, not a scientist and even scientists are nearly always wrong in predictions. Yes the movie is slow paced at times but Kubrick never set out to be just an entertainer, but a visionary which was it this film is, a vision. And in that aspect, this film hasn't aged one day Hunter.
Jun 11 - 07:26 AM
Correction: one of the (if not "the") most overrated films of all time, and THE most boring film I've ever seen.
Jun 24 - 10:33 PM
Alexander Burgos Collazo
There's always Transformers for the likes of you :)
Jul 5 - 02:02 PM
that is just plain stupid. there are people who only like action film, & people who like suspenseful dramas this is not. here's a real Sci-Fi masterpiece: Alien
Jul 9 - 08:56 AM
not even close. if this isn't a visionary masterpiece, then what is?
Mar 29 - 12:45 PM
How about Citizen Kane, Casablanca, or The Godfather? At least they had what this film lacked, an engaging plot.
Jul 30 - 11:53 AM
None hold a candle to 2001.
Aug 14 - 11:32 AM
Saying the Godfather doesn't hold a candle to any movie is plain wrong. Shutupa yo face
Jun 16 - 09:04 PM
I think the godfather holds candle. but Casablanca really is so over rated.
Jul 31 - 07:55 PM
Solaris is better
Oct 27 - 11:07 PM
Granted that Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Godfather, and any number of other films are masterpieces, but why exactly is it necessary for a VISUAL masterpiece to have a plot? Have you ever seen Koyaanisqatsi? If not, you should. Some of us don't need no stinkin plot to appreciate art. We can make up our own plot, if we need one.
Feb 10 - 03:41 AM
Feb 10 - 03:45 AM
casablanca is the most overrated movie of all time!
May 23 - 06:02 AM
Why is it that people feel the need to push arbitrary film "classics" into comparison with any given film X? Casablanca and Citizen Kane might have a compelling plot, but they do not create the sense of utter wonder and vastness that this film so stunningly does. The fact that a certain Mr. Hunter failed to see the film's merits and called it pretentious is an irredeemable error in my opinion and is, above all, wrong.
Jun 10 - 05:28 PM
actually, you're forgetting the Jupiter mission part of the movie, the rest of it is just a jigsaw puzzle for the truly intelligent, if you realize that kubrick hid the pieces in places that only minds as brilliant as his can find, you can piece it together completely.
Aug 22 - 08:53 PM
Anything that doesn't involve a ten minute sequence of a spaceship pulling into a spaceport with classical music playing in the background. It reminded me of a two and a half hour wait at the doctor's office, but at least the doctor's office has magazines to keep you occupied.
Jun 24 - 10:37 PM
Then go read one. Guns and Ammo, amirite?
Jul 19 - 01:27 AM
This critic is an idiot.
May 23 - 05:58 AM
May 31 - 03:34 PM
are you that stupid and that much of an idiot
Jun 6 - 03:40 PM
Jun 23 - 06:50 AM
Finally a man willing to speak the truth. Enemy, Ignorant and childish? Who the **** made you judge of people's opinion? IHATEPEOPLEWHOLIKETHISMOVIE
Jun 24 - 04:24 AM
You, sir, have the boorish manerisms of a Yale-leaguer
Jan 20 - 07:02 AM
Jun 9 - 09:05 AM
You say that no one has the right to judge someone's opinion, then you say you hate people who like this movie? A tad bit hypocritical.
Apr 10 - 10:57 AM
I think the last thing he said was meant to be sarcastic...lol
Jul 14 - 11:44 AM
Obviously, you and the critic are both too stupid to understand all of the implications of this film. That is a fact.
May 13 - 02:28 PM
Interesting to see you here Watcher- although I think this critic's little out burst was poorly spoken and not altogether true, he's still making a point that this film (when you look past its significance on todays Sci-Fi) is no longer "the greatest Sci-Fi ever made". He's right- it IS abysmally slow and pretentious. It's hype also preceeds it so highly that I had no choice but to be underwhelmed by it. :- S
Jan 1 - 02:55 AM
Precisely, I wasted two hours watching this.
Sep 27 - 08:26 AM
this guy's mother must have drank when she was pregnant
Aug 30 - 02:34 PM
Yeah, my thoughts exactly!
Sep 27 - 08:24 AM
God bless you.
Jun 24 - 10:38 PM
Well, thats the dumbest thing I've heard today.
Jul 2 - 03:57 PM
This movie is NOT about trying to predict inventions in the actual 2001. What an idiot.
Aug 25 - 11:51 AM
So right. Though even if it isn't it was really visionary a lot of it came true.
Jun 9 - 02:37 PM
Anyone who thinks this movie is bad should die.
Aug 29 - 05:43 PM
I almost did...of boredom...watching it.
I'm guessing movies longer than 45 minutes aren't your forte, huh? I'd think you were a six year old.
Jul 5 - 04:51 PM
i did of boredom for a few minutes, but then i fell out of my seat& came back to life
Jul 9 - 08:52 AM
woah, i love 2001, but isn't that taking it a little too far
Aug 22 - 08:57 PM
Sep 3 - 04:28 PM
This guy has to be my least favorite critic here at RT. Well, besides Victoria Alexander, of course...
Sep 16 - 02:44 PM
What about Cole Smithy, or Jonathan Rosenbaum?
Jul 27 - 06:56 PM
I choose Jonathan Rosenbaum as the worst critic of all time.
Jan 7 - 10:31 PM
Oct 13 - 11:30 PM
The most cinematically ignorant movie critic in the world, Stephen Hunter.
Nov 10 - 01:05 PM
Mr. Hunter has foolishly crossed the lone between serious professionalism and false conceit. His problem is now that he can never go back to relevance. He is now irrelevant. Hope it was worth the fleeting attention he was grasping at.
Mar 3 - 01:36 AM
The cinematography was great, it just needed to be cut down by, like, two thirds.
Jun 24 - 10:40 PM
If this is what you believe then you're just simply never going to understand this film. I'm amazed you're a hired film critic.
Nov 12 - 08:46 AM
I hope this critic dies a slow and painful death and then goes to a hell where his bad reviews are read to him over and over again
Nov 18 - 02:57 PM
I hope HAL gets you. And imprisons you in a small room where you will watch this movie for all eternity, you crackpot.
Sep 16 - 05:10 AM
Don't worry. HAL will get him eventually, put him to hibernation and force him to dream this film for all eternity. 'Nuff said.
Sep 16 - 05:11 AM
This movie for the most part focuses on images and fantasy. It's each individual's way of thinking and perceptions which decide the final judgment.
