Michael Bay Signs Up for "2012"
by Scott Weinberg | March 19, 2007
Discuss Article
No it's not part of the series that includes "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "2010," but it looks like Michael Bay is going to helm the science-fiction adventure "2012: The War for Souls," based on an upcoming novel by Whitley Streiber.

The screenwriting / producing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who just got done working with Mr. Bay on "Transformers," are the ones who convinced the director to grab the gig, and it looks to be the director's next project.

According to Variety, the story's about "an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to stop an apocalypse foreseen by the ancient Mayans."

Up next for Kurtzman & Orci is the J.J. Abrams version of "Star Trek." (Looks like these guys survived the "Island" implosion just fine.)

Ha! So basically a nerdy version of Jet Li's "The One." Everyone get ready for slow motion shots of doves flying, in space!

Doves with space helmets.....firing two handguns at the same time in faux matrix action scenes. Bay doesn't dissapoint.

Doves are John Woo's trademark, not Michael Bay's.... BONEHEAD!!!

Do your homework, then post comments on a website, guys!

"based on an upcoming novel"

So wait... we're talking about a movie based on a book that hasn't come out yet?

Does this seem back asswards to anyone else?

Michael Bay had great success with his last science-fiction adventure. Get off his case.

Great success?
Great COMMERCIAL success. The guy doesn't really have a lot of skill - he just throws in trucks of money to get special effects, then adds a stupid love story, and he thinks he's the new Spielberg. I hate Michael Bay, and I hate his big, stupid, commercial movies. He's a damn good example on how to waste millions of dollars from the budget.

Ehh
I don't get the Michael Bay bashing. Seriously, people who go to the movies just go to be entertained, they're not searching for masterpieces that will become turning points in their lives. Michael Bay is good at making people forget that they're alive for two hours. So he strictly makes popcorn movies, so what? Lay off him.

Eddie Murphy and the Wayans Bros. are the real evil.

Finally someone with some common sense. The Bay bashing is ridiculous, his movies are fantastic. They're not meant to win awards or provide groundbreaking stories. They're funny and fun-filled action flicks that actually make you feel like you got your money's worth when it's all over.

What, you mean "the Island?" Are you being sarcastic when you call that a "great success?"

Well it's not like I expect to use my brain when I go see a Bay film. But at the same time I always end up feeling dumber once the end credits start rolling.

Did you even read the story? It has nothing to do with that series.

I think the plot sounds dumb, regardless of director.
