Trailer Bulletin: Crowe vs. Bale in "3:10 to Yuma"

It's a project that almost died and got resurrected more than once, but so far this "3:10 to Yuma" remake looks like it was worth the trouble.

Russell Crowe is the villain. Christian Bale is the hero. James Mangold is the director. Here is the trailer.

Now, I know I'm a soft touch when it comes to westerns, but that's a pretty impressive trailer, no? Yeah, it gives too much away (like most trailers do), but since the movie's based on a fairly well-known 1957 film (not to mention the original Elmore Leonard story), I guess they're not too worried about spoilers on this one.

Flick looks solid to me. Opens on October 5th.

Could be good. I'm a big western fan, but I haven't seen the original yet. Netflix!

Hate Westerns. Love this! Between this and American Gangster, I have a feeling this fall will be the comeback Russell Crowe has needed.

arendr

arendr on 06-18-2007 09:05 AM

If you say you hate Westerns and have never seen a Sergio Leone movie my open hand will come through your computer screen and slap you. Of course, if you have seen Sergio Leone and still hate Westerns I will also slap you. So you're pretty much screwed either way.

This fall: the return of the gladiator!

That was a bit of an over-reaction. But you should see some Leone anyway.

Looks pretty cool. This will either be as good as it looks (in terms of how well-done the trailer is and its cast and director) or be a dissapointment, but I don't know how they could screw this up.

It was only yesterday after watching Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch for the frst time in years did I think they don't seem to make great westerns like that anymore.
I stand corrected.

This along with American Gangster looks like 2007 will belong to Russell Crowe.

it is definitely looking like that...some redemption for that last movie he did where he was the stock trader or whatever i don't know i saw it on an airplane to Amsterdam and it was painful to watch miles up in the sky and nothing else to do.

wilkiedriver

wilkiedriver on 06-18-2007 12:42 PM

You're thinking of "A Good Year". I saw it in theaters and liked it, but with my experience any movie on a plane sucks (headphones suck, picture quality is atrocious) unless you have a laptop or PSP.

"I like this side of you", Russell says. I like every side of Christian Bale! I know that sounded gay, so mock me. At least I know I'll be mocked for a person, who's worth it.

arendr

might i suggest you stop using soap with lavender and tea tree oil? it reduces your testosterone levels.

i guess a man crush on Bale is okay though. he's pretty cool. as long as it's not some pretty boy.

I have a man-crush on Leo DiCaprio, so what does that say about me?

This movies looks wonderful. Haven't had a good Western since like...Unforgiven. And that was 15 years ago.

No love for Ben Foster? This guy consistently puts forth commanding performances. I would bet he is somewhat of a scene stealer in this film.

Hehe, an Englishman and an Aussie playing two starring roles in a Western. :) Why don't they just toss Jet Li in for good measure?

Nonetheless... Bale's good... Crowe... wellll, I tolerate him... this might be decent. And hey... it's not a comic book movie!

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 06-19-2007 02:18 AM

I'm sure Russell Crowe appreciates your tolerance (Rolls his eyes). and your right foreign people shouldn't be involved in Westerns. Look how crappy Richard Harris was in Unforgiven, and Ian McShane in Deadwood he's terrible and Sergio Leone that guy couldn't direct himself out of a wet paper bag. Note the sarcasm.

Haven't any of you people seen The Proposition?!? I'd call that a rather fantastic Western.

I knew I was missing something. I knew there had been a good one between Unforgiven and this 3:10 dealie. The Proposition is fantastic, love the score.

I actually thought Open Range was a good traditional western, but it's become very uncool to praise Kevin Costner. Which I find funny since most everybody is always harping on how much they hate cookie cutter hollywood films and here's a guy who tried to transition from them to making non-standard fair and got crushed for it because one of his movies went over budget.

dracus

dracus on 06-20-2007 05:00 AM

I wholeheartedly agree with your views on Open Range. And if for not other reason than Val Kilmer's wicked portrayal of Doc Holiday, I also think that Tombstone is another great one.

Trailer Bulletin: Crowe vs. Bale in "3:10 to Yuma"
The original is a good Western movie, and it looks like the new one sticks pretty close to the concept. Of course, Glenn Ford and Van Heflin didn't get Oscar nominations, so it may not be that kind of success. Still, I think it looks enjoyable.

bigbrother, Kevin Costner went over-budget on TWO hyped films in the nineties, Waterworld and The Postman. Both of these turned out to be less impressive than their massive budget's and time-length were worth. So people ridiculed him. Perhaps it was reminiscint of the old story of one-time director Marlon Brando, who was said to have used up huge amounts of film to find that one perfect wave in a scene (in "One-Eyed Jacks," which is actually a pretty good movie).

However, Open Range was excellent I think. Costner is on an upswing with well-reviewed performances in The Upside of Anger and Mr. Brooks.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 06-20-2007 02:15 AM

Shocking I know, but I liked the Postman. Good story, flawed everyman hero, and Shakespeare. What more do you want? :)

I too liked the Postman, I liked the story, it was a tad long, but hey, if every movie was exactly 90 minutes we would complain about that too.

Well boys, I am a female and have a girl crush on Bale :--)
Crowe doesn't do much for me other than sometimes he is a very good actor!
