The Tracker (David Gulpilil, The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith, Rabbit-Proof Fence) has the job of pursuing The Fugitive, an aborigine who is suspected of murdering a white woman, as he leads three mounted policemen: The Fanatic, The Follower and also The Veteran across the outback. The Tracker, a mysterious and enigmatic figure whose true character remains unknown, assists them in their quest. As they move deeper into the bush and further away from civilization, the toxic forces of paranoia and violence begin to escalate, stirring up questions of what is black and what is white and who is leading whom. Their journey becomes an acrimonious and murderous trek that shifts power from one man to another, challenged by the indigenous people they come across as well as each other. -- © ArtMattan Productions [More]

Though certainly not without merit, Rolf de Heer’s The Tracker commits the cardinal sin of cinema; it’s excruciatingly boring a good chunk of the time.

An obvious, hot-coal piece of politically correct agitprop.

[Gulpilil] is a commanding screen presence, and his character's abundant humanism makes him the film's moral compass.

As the scorned but ever-resourceful guide, Gulpilil has the richest role and makes the most of it.

This is one movie that may fare better on home video, where viewers can hit the mute button every time those awful ditties come along.

An imposing film that tackles a serious theme with dignity and even audacity and that features production values of the highest quality.

[T]he film emphasizes its fable qualities and sets the stage for its moral structure, which hinges on the merging of power and racism and the possibility of resistance.

A stunning piece of visual poetry that will, hopefully, be remembered as one of the most important stories to be told in Australia’s film history.

The Tracker is a deftly rendered Australian parable about white racism and aboriginal survival in the face of the politics of violence and domination.

De Heer doesn't want the violence to distract from the sadness and the substance of the movie's mythic history lesson. It's an inventive idea, one that probably doomed the movie's commercial prospects here in the States.
