For their acclaimed BBC series THE BLUE PLANET, directors Alistair Fothergill and Andy Byatt dispatched cameras to the far reaches of the earth in order to collect footage of sea life that, for all its otherworldliness, might as well have been captured by the Hubble Telescope. DEEP BLUE is a mesmerizing highlight reel of the most entrancing footage from their journey. Among the unforgettable images on display is a sea horse that alternately resembles a Chinese dragon and a thriving house plant, a squadron of penguins violently hurling themselves belly-first onto an ice floe, a heartbreaking slow-motion killer whale attack on a baby seal, and a montage of willowy deep-sea denizens that call to mind the extraterrestrials from James Cameron's THE ABYSS. As the kaleidoscope of stunning imagery unfolds, Pierce Brosnan's unobtrusive narration attempts to put it all into nonscientific perspective, while George Fenton's effective score veers between thunderous orchestral cues and quietly mysterious bells and chimes. Eschewing textbook wordiness in favor of pure jaw-dropping visual awe, the struggles and oddities from the world of DEEP BLUE are sure to be eye-opening for all but the most seasoned seafarer. [More]

Reviews for Deep Blue
It's not always pretty, but it's a shining of example of nature at its most brutal and beautiful.
A trip reminding us that, while we continue to explore space, we have yet to fully penetrate the mysteries of our own planet.
It may not actually be comprehensive, but it feels like Deep Blue touches on all the points worth knowing, and more just for fun.
Deep Blue isn’t as fortunate with screen dimensions, but it works, if only because it’s hard to deny the vast beauty and mysteries that lie in our abyssal oceans.
It goes on a little too long for mostly just pretty pictures, and you get more wonder than educational detail, but it's fascinating to look at.
Deep Blue is like the oceans: stunningly beautiful and packed with shocking violence.
If you see Deep Blue in theaters, it will be hard to resist seeking out the entire eight-part miniseries.
Wide-ranging documentary on the mysteries and marvels of the ocean and the creatures that reside there.
Deep Blue, while as gorgeously photographed as other nature documentaries, is more grisly than most.
Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly: you'll see both, nicely choreographed.
Documentary about the ocean's panorama of life is full of beauty, awe, terror, wonder -- and jaw-dropping cinematography.
This majestic film has all the hallmarks of Beeb quality workmanship.
The information you find inside may not be anything more than you haven't garnered from watching Animal Planet, but it is an extremely well made and well shot piece.
Numerous films have explored undersea life, but few as comprehensively and as consistently compelling as Deep Blue.
A nice piece of work, but unfortunately it smacks of bandwagon-jumping following the success of such docs as Winged Migration.
The film keeps facts and figures to a minimum and lets the breathtaking images (underscored by George Fenton's sometimes bombastic score) carry the show.
