New to Los Angeles, Nell (Angela Bettis) and Steven Barrow (Brent Roam) rent an apartment in the Lusman Building. Built in the 1940s, this luxurious art deco hotel was a playground for the rich and famous in Hollywood's heyday. Later it fell on bad times…but now the old building is being restored to its former glory. What no one knows, however, is that the Lusman should never have been tampered with. Renovating the building has brought out a supernatural horror -- someone or something who knows every secret of the place, who can get past any lock. One by one he’s picking off the residents. Our heroine Nell starts hearing strange noises and noticing things she can't explain. Who is the old man in the laundry room who seems to know pieces of the Lusman's sordid past? Why does she have the sense that someone's watching her? In the tradition of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tobe Hooper creates a terrifying vision of a young woman trapped in a battle with supernatural evil. Similar in tone to both classic Italian horror films and landmark 1970s American movies, The Toolbox Murders takes viewers on a ride that will fuel their nightmares for years to come. [More]

Reviews
Saying The Toolbox Murders is the finest Tobe Hooper film since The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ... isn’t saying much.
...Hooper creates a film that's almost as effective as his first big success - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
In a genre where so many titles disappoint, Hooper makes sure that this one won’t.
Toolbox Murders is arguably the movie everyone has been waiting for Hooper to make since Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
A truly vicious, gruesome and utterly ludicrous movie that exists only to make us jump in our seats.
Tobe Hooper’s latest is not unlike an episode of Melrose Place as imagined by Lucio Fulci.
Toolbox may not renew the splatter genre in any significant way, but the chills and kills prove Hooper, when armed with the right script, can still tighten the fright screws.
I suspect one might as well just place the audience in a room and periodically make sudden loud noises.
This one might just be a small blip on the current Horror Remake horizon, but it's a knowingly nasty and entirely enjoyable throwback to a slashier time.
