Because of a difficult gestation period, STRANGERS WITH CANDY has endured several mooted release dates and a change of distributor, so fans of the Comedy Central TV show will doubtless be delighted to finally witness this full-length adaptation. The movie revolves around Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris), a 47-year-old former jailbird, recovering heroin addict, and ex-prostitute with a bemused, elastic face. Director Paul Dinello takes a skip back in time, essentially making this a prequel to the television show, with Jerri fresh out of jail at the start of the film and starting a new life as an over-age high school student. With Jerri's dad in a coma, she decides she has to excel in school in a desperate bid to awaken him, although Principal Blackman (Gregory Hollimon) and science teacher Mr. Noblet (Stephen Colbert) frequently throw curveballs in her path. The loose plot revolves around the hiring of a consultant, Roger Beekman (Matthew Broderick), to change the school's ailing fortunes, ultimately resulting in a Science Fair that Jerri is determined to win. But the story is merely a hook on which the cast hangs myriad jokes, with DAILY SHOW favorite Colbert and Sedaris herself deliriously extending gags from the original series. So Jerri's ability to spin a web of sexual desire over all the high school hotties remains, as do the various After School Special lampoons, such as the "lessons" Jerri learns from her behavior, which fail to teach her anything at all. Cameos come thick and fast throughout, with Allison Janney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Sarah Jessica Parker all appearing, and the overall feel perfectly replicates the original TV series. Unlikely to appeal beyond the show's hardcore fanbase, Danillo's movie is nevertheless a welcome opportunity to see Sedaris and co. in action once again. [More]

Reviews for Strangers With Candy
This movie is worse than flying from JFK to Singapore in the middle seat between two chatty Scientologists. It's worse than do-it-yourself rhinoplasty. It's even worse than college improv.
Despite its faithfulness and frequent funniness, Jerri's big-screen (mis)adventure never provides more laughs than one of Comedy Central's TV-on-DVD compilations.
Like many feature films based on small-screen, short-form comedy, Strangers With Candy feels more like a long, sloppy 'very special' episode than a movie.
It doesn't live up to the premise of an after-school special parody, but neither fans of the TV series nor newbies with an appreciation of absurd comedy will be disappointed.
Did you ever hear a joke that everyone else finds hilarious and you just don't get?
Strangers With Candy regularly lampoons junkie-reparation melodramas and after-school specials, but with so little focus it's never clear what the film, or even Sedaris's vaudeville buffoon incarnation, is supposed to be parodying.
like that After School Special some of us were secretly hoping would happen one day . . where it all goes horribly wrong in delightfully interesting ways instead of sticking to the moral high ground with a prissy and predictable moral lesson to be learned
If you loved Amy Sedaris before in a golfer-lady wig and inbred chump's grin, you'll maybe love her again here, while wishing she had another TV-episode-size venue for her talents.
Inspired jokes run neck-and-neck with flat ones. Still, the faux 'instructive' tone (full of ostensible life lessons that couldn't be more amoral) and rack of offbeat characterizations keeps things diverting.
Certainly the first 30 minutes of this film are among the most hilarious first 30 minutes of any film. Pity it couldn't last.
