Heinz Butler's documentary about famed photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson is deeply frustrating because of its brevity and its lack of solid information and historical context.
Since Cartier-Bresson died shortly after filming was completed, at age 95, it stands as a rare record of the thoughts and mannerisms of a man who lived through the camera but preferred to avoid its all-seeing eye.
What distinguishes Cartier-Bresson's photographs, and what makes him a great artist, is his consistency and compassion.
Any documentary that shows so many Cartier-Bresson images has worth (though why they couldn't be shown in tighter close-up is a source of considerable frustration).
This austere documentary portrait of the pioneering photojournalist is not a biography but an interview conceived as a master class on art appreciation.
I'm not sure if this wispy doc is a preferable alternative to an intimate evening at home flipping through a Cartier-Bresson photo collection.
Does anyone still need to be persuaded of Cartier-Bresson's greatness? The famous faces Bütler interviewed add to our sense of the photographer's accomplishment only when they supply personal details.
