A sweet-natured film, steeped in richly varied and seductive Latin music.

The director stacks the deck in favor of the dreamers, when she should have stacked it against them.

So good-natured and well-intentioned (showcasing as it does up-and-coming Latino bands) that it's tempting to overlook its significant narrative flaws.

...recycles every cliche from the Purple Rain/Crossover Dreams playbook, to tepid effect.

Refreshingly old-fashioned.

Though the film is crammed with music -- the soundtrack is stellar -- the production numbers fall completely flat, leaving you to pine for the over-caffeinated touch of Baz Luhrmann.

I was surprised that John Leguizamo was in this at first because it was a TV movie, but it was pretty good.
