"The Hobbit" is Not in Raimi's Head Yet
"Lord of the Rings" fans couldn’t imagine an appropriate director for the "Hobbit" prequel until Sam Raimi’s name was thrown into the mix. But now that he’s available to talk about it during his "Spider-Man 3" press rounds, Raimi can’t even think about a vision for middle earth.
“I haven’t even thought about that because I don’t really know what I’m doing next,” he said. “It’s so soon, my ears are still ringing from the mix on this picture.”
It’s only recently that Raimi’s name would be mentioned with such major franchises. Less than five years ago, he was still that horror movie guy. Now they’re wooing him for more Spideys and possible taking over Oscar-winner Peter Jackson’s world.
“Well, I know that that will pass. Mostly I see myself as who I was for the 20 years of making films professionally before my Super-8 days and that was Mr. low budget schlockmeister horror film guy. You know, low budget crime thriller or low budget supernatural thriller. Although I have the occasional different picture, I always found that it was strange that Amy Pascal hired me to do this film. I really loved the film and I wanted it, but I thought it was a bold and unusual choice. When it had that tremendously successful franchise, I realized this too will pass. This is a very strange experience and I realized how unusual it was and I know that it won’t be here long.”

The one who co-wrote the Spider-Man 3 screenplay (Ivan) or the one who plays Hoffman in all of the Spider-Man movies (Ted). Either way, considering any of them "extremely untalented" might be a little bit of an exaggeration (I didn't think Ted Raimi did that bad playing Hoffman; his scenes with J.K. Simmons seemed to show a great comedic chemistry between those two actors. However, it is just one role). (Reply to this) |

Silver Snake writes: on Apr 29 2007 08:47 AM In reply to this comment (#863113) Ivan's okay. I was talking about Ted. I guess I'm being too hard on him, as he's always seemed pretty natural in front of the camera. It's just the characters that he plays, perhaps. I never liked Joxer from Xena, and his Pavlov character from Man with the Screaming Brain grated on my nerves. I'm just not a big fan of Hollywood nepotism either. Does Ted have to be in everything that Sam does? But, I will agree, he does do well with J.K. Looking forward to their scenes in Spidey 3. (Reply to this) |

Something about him trying to live and work in a town where everyone thinks he's crazy for shooting up that S-Mart...ooo i want it. (Reply to this) |

So what if Sam gives Ted a couple of days work on his movie? It's not like he made him the lead. Because, Ted's a nice guy and deserves any good work he can get. If you didn't like the characters he played, blame the writers, not him. He obviously did a good job, because you remember him. As for Man with the Screaming Brain, what about that movie didn't get on your nerves? I thought it was pretty hideous all the way around (and I'm a big BC fan.) (Reply to this) |

After all, it's not like the LOTR's was published in 2000. Funny how so many of these 'other' people now claim they could have directed LOTR's after Jackson made it what it was. To say 'other' people could direct The Hobbit better than Jackson is the same as saying 'other' people could have directed The Godfather or Citizen Kane. (Reply to this) |

quietus28 writes: on Aug 03 2007 01:55 PM I'd rather they didn't make a Hobbit movie as opposed to Raimi directing it. Spiderman 3 pretty much showed why he was that cheesy horror movie guy: because he can't write good dialogue or coherent action scenes. (Reply to this) |
