Peter Jackson and New Line to Kiss and Make Up?
Judge's ruling could pave the way for a Jackson-directed Hobbit.
by Jeff Giles | October 05, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
After months of duking it out with New Line in the courts (and in public), it appears as if a path may have finally been cleared for Peter Jackson to return to Middle-earth.

We aren't going to get heavily into the details here -- we are only humble gossipmongers without law degrees, after all, and the court case between Jackson and New Line involves armies of attorneys and roughly $300 gazillion -- but this week, a judge rapped the studio on the knuckles for failing to provide key documents. New Line now must pay a $125,000 sanction, and has until Tuesday to turn over internal audits relating to disputed profits from the Lord of the Rings movies.

It sounds like a perfectly boring detail from a big ol' lawsuit, but it's potentially meaningful for Lord of the Rings fans, because the judge's decision could very well open up negotiations for a settlement between Jackson and New Line...and, in the process, set wheels in motion for The Hobbit. As Entertainment Weekly puts it:

At this writing, no agreements have been announced and details of the negotiations are sketchy (neither New Line nor Jackson's camp would comment to EW on any aspect of this story), but sources close to the talks tell us that they're detecting a lot less frost in the air, and that a deal may be reached that could help usher J.R.R. Tolkien's maiden Middle-earth masterpiece to screens before the end of the decade.

''There has been a détente,'' says one insider. "There is now the beginning of a discourse between Peter Jackson and New Line that's running parallel to the litigation proceedings.''

There's a lot more to the story, obviously -- but luckily for you, to read a fairly comprehensive, five-page rundown of the whole thing, all you've got to do is click on the link below. Get clickin'!

Well, it's a first step. I wouldn't mind 'The Hobbit' going into development.

It's funny how New Line was shunning Jackson, when he made them their most profitable movies ever. They will eventually blow him and beg him to make the Hobbit. Which is good, because a world with no Hobbit movie is a world I wouldn't want to live in.

I hope this gets this film going. The original cast isn't getting any younger (ask Christopher Lee), and you really need the necessary cast members to reprise their roles and Jackson to adapt and direct again (or it won't mesh with the other films, which it should).

It seems New Line needed a whack to the head by a judge to handle this situation correctly. Now that they (and their overbearing president) find out they are in the wrong for withholding those documents, they can get off their self-righteous horses and get the prequel made.

After all, everybody wins if Jackson comes back. What has New Line done since the LOTR trilogy that has garnered even half the money or critical acclaim that was rec'd thanks to Jackson. Don't bite the hand that feeds you New Line. You shouldn't need a judge to tell you that.

Peter Jackson sucks and so do the Lord of the rings movies, but they do make a lot of money, so I suppose they oughta get over it and continue to keep makin money. Don't reply telling me the movies don't suck because they do, watch the first one the opening shots are horrible and Peter Jackson is over rated.

Photosuperstar = dick of the day. Tough to edit your copy once you hit that Submit button. But it looks like you found that out yourself. And who gives a rat's about minor typos - the intent is clear. Sheesh - get a frickin' life or something.

OK, on to the post about people not getting any younger. Depending on how true to the book they go, the only real concern here is Gandalf and Elrond. I think it is clear they won't be able to use Ian Holm as Bilbo unless they do some serious makeup work. His brief shot finding the ring in the prologue was just that - brief. But hey they can do almost anything these days. Now, if they decide to turn this into TWO films (part one takes our hero through Mirkwood and fades out just as Bilbo spots the Lonely Mountain in the distance as he and the barreled-up dwarves float down the river; part two deals with all the politics and the dragon and some actual character development for Bard and a really awesome Battle of Five Armies) they could also have time to include Gandalf and the Wizard's Council doing battle against the Necromancer. THEN they would need Christopher Lee. Pl;us, they could easily sneak in cameos of the other players - Legolas in the background of the Elf King's; Gimli among the Dwarves in the Battle of Five Armies, Aragorn in the background at Rivendell. Those would all be pretty cheeseball but still kinda fun!

Whew - I guess I had a lot to get off my chest! :-)

Yikes! They'd better hurry up and film then. I think I see the bony fingers of death on Christopher Lee's shoulder!

Lovely Bones, Halo and The Hobbit.

My god, i don't know anyone who has such a trio of great projects coming down the pipeline and if you combine that with Heavenly Creatures, LOTR and King Kong and you've got the most consistenly great director since, Hitchcock, Kubrick and Speilberg.

Yeah, New Line is being idiotic about this, politicly, artisitly, and economicly.

do I detect sarcasm?

I have only seen Jackson's mainstream work. And unless someone comes along with over a billion dollars to make a new Lord of the Rings with six parts then a better movie probably wasn't possible. You should hink of the lord of the rings as one novel, in six parts, which is what Tolkien intended. His publisher made him split his work into three separate novels.

I won't say that the movies were flawless, either as an adaptation or has a standalone work. Yes, there was inevitably a good deal of work to make Jackson's movie mainstream, but it didn't suffer as horribly as most people think.

To give an idea to those who didn't read the Lord of the Rings, the first book goes from Bilbo's party, to Frodo's journey through the shire, ending at the bridge before Rivendale. That's a movie in itself.

Each book should be at least 2 hours, (maybe 3 hours), for a grand epic total of at least 12 hours, but more than likely longer. That would not only be a really faithful retelling but really amazing. It would probably take 2 or more years to film though.

Imagine if all the star wars films, (both trilogies) were crammed into 3 films. I think the films, (particularly the dismal prequels) would be much much worse.

Understandable that not everyone likes the Lord of the Rings, but if you think peter jackson is a bad director, I'm afraid you haven't perused his whole library. Go out to blockbuster and rent Dead Alive. Easily one of the best movies ever. Proof of the oscar's negligence.

P.S. Walkingdead, it's in the same vein of humor as Meet the Feebles but is more consistantly funny.
