Exclusive: Ian McKellen on The Hobbit

The thesp on returning to Gandalf the Grey.

Sir Ian McKellen is spending the week at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, where he was last night presented with a special Donostia Award in recognition of his career as an actor. RT was in town to catch the presentation, and earlier in the day we sat down with McKellen to discuss the award and his work. Of course, as Guillermo del Toro readies to direct The Hobbit, which will see McKellen pull on the cloak and hat of Gandalf the wizard for the first time in seven years, we couldn't help but look to the future and find out how things were going with the project.

In fact it was McKellen who raised the wizard's name before we asked, rather controversially declaring to RT, "I don't want to play Gandalf again."

But before a million Rings fans cry out in terror at the thought of another thesp stepping into the role, McKellen was actually discussing the risk of typecasting the wake of a big success. "If you play a part that gets an awful lot of attention," he explained, "forever after you're being asked by directors to play the same part in their movie. But I played the best wizard, and I'm happy to revisit him, which I shall do in The Hobbit with Guillermo del Toro."

Not only will The Hobbit afford McKellen another chance to find his feet with one of literature's greatest wizards, but the film will also allow him to return to the earlier incarnation of the character, Gandalf the Grey, who only appeared in the first of the trilogy, Fellowship of the Ring.

"Grey Gandalf is my favourite," he told us. "Peter Jackson's too, we always preferred Gandalf the Grey. Peter liked him because he got down and dirty. He slept in the hedgerows; he was closer to the earth and not quite so spiritual. He's also funnier -- he's got more variety to him. We thought there was more scope in that Gandalf."

One of the joys of playing the character for McKellen is his broad appeal. "He appeals to really young people. Gandalf has 8 and 9-year-old fans who've seen his films a great deal more than I have. Their faces when they meet the actor who plays Gandalf are wonderful to behold, so that's been special."

Del Toro and Jackson -- the latter acting as a producer this time around -- are deep in pre-production on The Hobbit, which will be released as two films in 2011 and 2012. There'll be more from our chat with McKellen, and our time at the San Sebastian Film Festival, soon.

Great news, IMO The Hobbit is far superior to Lotr, and there are few directors that can come close to Del Toro's visual style(not even jackson).

There was no way that anyone else would be playing Gandalf...other than McKellen himself.

(File this one under: "You'll have to take my word for it"...but a mutual friend who acted a small role in his RSC 2007 production of 'King Lear' confirmed during their New Zealand venue that a private party at Peter Jackson's house after one performance [which my friend attended] resulted in a casual chat where McKellen was asked there and then in front of the cast by Jackson if he would play Gandalf again...where Jackson received an enthusiastic 'Yes, of course!').

McKellen is one very cool dude. Looking forward to these films more than anything else...

I am excited to hear that The Hobbit movie is going to be made. Although I am not a fan of the Lord of the Rings, I remember the animated Hobbit TV movie and I'm sure this new movie will bring some nostalgia from my childhood.

The only questions is what actor is to play the young Bilbo Baggins, will Ian Holm from the Lord of the Rings movies reprise his role?

wouldn't ewan macgregor make a great young bilbo?
who would you cast if you could?

Sadly from what has been said it is doubtful, but apparently the idea of Holms showing up in the gap bridging film. There was talk of James Mcavoy playing Bilbo, but I really hope that is false. Don't get me wrong he is talented, still I have no confidence in him carrying The Hobbit as the main character.

Although The Hobbit is in no way near as deep as LOTR, it is a very fun, light romp through Middle Earth. Should be a blast to watch!

Yeah, I always thought the fact that Hobbit didn't try to be as deep was exactly what it had going for it. Lotr is so bloated and heavy winded. There are just too many plot lines that never really come to fruition.

The Hobbit is just a tighter all around story, the light hearted tone being a nice change of pace from the whole fire and brimstone of the Lotr series. This is after all, a fantasy story that follows a munchkin by the name of Bilbo.

Well of course. The Hobbit was comprised of 1 book. The lore and and fantasy of the true Lord of the Ring spanned 3 books.

However, even though it is small compared to the 3 novels, the back story and characters of The Hobbit are very unique, and they aren't very well elaborated in the movies. It shall be interesting how Del Toro, who I have an exorbitant amount of respect for, in terms of visual design, will handle the scenery and characters.

My family will be very happy. After playing The Lord of the Rings games on our GAMECUBE and XBOX 360 and seeing both versions of each LOTR movie . . . the dialog and acting are TERRIBLE (HORRIBLE even . . . OVERBLOWN off a cliff of intellence.)

BUT the movies and the games are BEAUTIFUL. And the books are ENCHANTING especially when Tolkein writes about characters listening to the symphony of running water and winds blowing through the forrest.

Since my young adult life, I have immersed myself into the Tolkien works and read and re-read The Hobbit, The Trilogy, The Silmarillion.....I am looking VERY forward to seeing these two films as a prequel to the Trilogy.
"There and Back Again" a Hobbit's Tale.

I also hope Agent Smith returns as Elrond!

I wonder if Strider is in the scripts. I know he's not in the Hobbit book, but I'm not sure exactly what PJ and Co have in mind for two Hobbit movies...

i get all those books confused but i think strider came up once in the hobbit, when gandalf was telling a story of when strider captured gollum. i may be wrong but they can work strider in there somehow.

Awesome news. Sir McKellan owns this part and I couldn't see anyone else playing him, and Gandalf the grey is so much better than the all too serious white wizard.

The Hobbit cannot arrive in theaters too soon. McKellan returning to play Gandalf in his most entertaining form (The Grey) will be a real treat.

"Ian McKellen on The Hobbit". What?...Oh.

Anyway, LOTR trilogy is pretty much the best movie series ever, so "The Hobbit" is pretty much my most anticipated movie of the next decade.

"How do I act so well? What I do is I pretend to be the person I'm portraying in the film or play.

Case in point: Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson comes from New Zealand and says to me, 'Sir Ian, I want you to be Gandalf the wizard,' and I say to him, 'You are aware that I am not really a wizard.' And he said, 'Yes, I am aware of that. What I want you to do is use your acting skills to portray the wizard for the duration of the film. So I said, 'Okay.'

And then I said to myself, 'Mmm, how would I do that?' And this is what I did. I imagined what it would be like to be a wizard, and then I pretended and acted in that way on the day. And how did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me.

If we were to draw a graph of my process, of my method, it would be something like this: Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Action! - "Wizard, you shall not pass!" - Cut!, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian."

Dwarfs and more Dwarfs, this is what truly makes me happy. Can't wait for the movie(s). Sir Ian back is certainly a huge plus but dwarfs and a dragon as well. Ah, life is sweet.

This'll definitely be good. I like me some Tolkien.. but when all the Tolkien stuff is done PLEASE can we have the Elric Saga or some good ol' R.E. Howard gritty S&S. Can't wait for "Solomon Kane" btw.
