It's clever and sweet and pretty consistently funny.

To Todd's surprise, he and Kelly strike up a friendship. They decide to take revenge on Barry by reversing the joke. After their date, the pair saunter past Barry holding hands. The joke works too well. Freaking out and convinved that Todd is gay, Barry calls their mother to break the news. Concerned, she arrives on the next plane. Despite his vehement denials, Mom now sees Todd's love of movies and theater, as well as his lack of interest in sports, as clear signs she'd previously missed. She is determined to prove to her son that she loves him no matter what. Nothing Todd says or does can convince her that he's actually straight! Soon, everyone in his life believes he is gay. His frantic attempts to prove his heterosexuality with a sexy younger woman end in disaster. He starts to wonder, could his feelings for Kelly be more than he'd ever suspected? --© Official Site [More]
Reviews for Coffee Date
It's so full of bland good will, the story goes nowhere in romantic-comedy terms.
Coffee Date is a film of small objectives, yet still achieves a fully-realized emotional state that's genuine, even in the midst of broad comedy.
Coffee Date has lots going on, and its message -- there are all kinds of love — is an earnest one. But the script relies too heavily on stock characters and overused plot devices to make any real impact.
How disappointing that a film that hints at the fluid, nonbinary natures of love and attraction should labor so hard to knot its own loose ends.
Amid a recent flurry of low-budget independent productions, Coffee Date is a standout with its strongly developed central characters, complex themes and polished look.
COFFEE DATE is an amusing twist on the somewhat tired genre of romantic comedy, although it really is more of a buddy movie.
Leaving no cliché unturned, Coffee Date provides cheesy music, chats about gaydar and the obligatory are-you-looking-at-mine? urinal scene.
Queer cinema in this country is suffering and Coffee Date is further confirmation that gay men in Los Angeles have way too much money to throw around.
While the acting occasionally stoops to horrid, even worse is that the characters themselves can be aggravatingly insipid, strutting the most tired of gay-phobic jokes.
This bittersweet indie's greatest asset is that stars [Jonathan] Bray and [Wilson] Cruz have both real chemistry and a real problem -- as opposed to a series of trumped-up plot machinations -- standing in the way of romance.
Story would be easy to take more seriously if the technique weren't so unpolished.
A warmhearted tale carried by genuine affection and a charming cast rather than cutting one-liners and turbo-charged plotting.
