Critical Consensus: Third Time's Not the Charm for "Shrek"
by Alex Vo | May 17, 2007
Discuss Article
America is going green this week: "Shrek the Third" (featuring the voices of Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas) is our single new wide release. Critics loved the first two, how do they feel about this one?

Shrek's third outing finds our green antihero in an unusual predicament: the king has died, and Shrek is next in line to ascend to the throne. Typically, he wants nothing of it and must set off to find a replacement. Hijinks, fart jokes, and ironic postmodern deconstruction ensue. But critics say "Third" has gone too far with the "Shrek" formula: it relies too heavily on pop culture references and fairy tale spoofs, marginalizing the heart and charm that made the first two classics. Also, the sheer amount of new and returning characters has given the best characters - Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona - the least screen time in any "Shrek" yet. "Shrek the Third" is at 42 percent, a far cry from "Shrek"'s and "Shrek 2"'s 89 and 88 percent Tomatometers, respectively.

"I...am not right-handed."

And opening in limited release: "Once," a crowd-pleasing drama about two street musicians (check out our interview with director John Carney), is at 100 percent; "Severance," a British import of shock horror and droll comedy, is at 74 percent; "Brooklyn Rules," a drama set in the titular borough circa 1985, is at 56 percent; "Flanders," the new art pic from festival fave Bruno Dumont, is at 50 percent; "The Wendell Baker Story," a light-hearted drama featuring possibly more Wilson Brothers than we're equipped to handle, is at 40 percent; "Fay Grim," the new action/thriller/comedy from quirky auteur Hal Hartley, is at 40 percent; "Even Money," a cautionary tale about the ills of gambling, is at 20 percent; and "The Last Sin Eater," the second release of Fox Faith's Christian parable, is at 20 percent.

In "Flanders" field.

And medals, commendations, and accolades to unbreakable_samurai and SplendidIsolation who both came closest to guessing "Delta Farce"'s three percent Tomatometer last week. We, too, were surprised by its extraordinarily high rating.

Yeah, and I really wish it would, but the more reviews come in, the more the score seems to drop. It really is sad to see this movie do so poorly, the other two were great. All good things come to an end though.

It's the curse of 3quels. Of every third movie this year, I bet only two or so will be really good.

It is more then likely still really good. Don't fall into the trap of believing the critics. They have been wrong so many times on what movie is good and what movie is bad, that I would need more then a couple of hands to count them.

Either that or believe them and go see Once instead, and wish you had a knife to end the pain.

Dammit, Mr. Brooks better be screened for critics and do well at the box office. It's one of my picks for my Fantasy Mogul studio. :(

If I didn't rely on critics at all, I wouldn't be on this site in the first place. I don't even know what the hell "Once" is. I'll probably just skip a trip to the cinema entirely this weekend. 95 percent of the time people tell me critics were wrong, I usually end up in agreement with the critics anyway. Good and Bad are nothing but relative terms really. I just find my idea of good to be somewhat close to what critics tend to find good. I'm sure even if the general consensus is that this movie isn't all that great, it'll still be someones favorite movie ever.

sorry but this is a KIDS movie people. who gives a crap about anybody's review anyway, especially a person its not designed for? hey, i got it...lets have a woman review 300, or a homophobe review Shortbus. brilliiiiant! don't even second guess going to see a movie based on "critics". if you let ONE person get to you and not see a movie because of what they say...its because you're their b3tch. if you're somebody's b3tch...by all means...listen to what they gots to say and do what they want. now i'm off to see it...cuz well, my son wants to see it and i have no choice...

Hell yeah, congrats to SplendidIsolation my co-winner in the genius of guessing. I enjoyed the first two Shrek's so I'm definitely still going to see this one, plus the only other movie's at the two theaters in my city that I haven't seen are Delta Farce and Geogia Rule both of which I don't really want to see in theaters and I go every weekend, so not really much of a desicion. Was really hoping that we would get Waitress, mabey next week.

And congrats to you as well unbreakable_samurai. I`m also going to see shrek, just not this weekend (or next, I think either pirates or bug is going to grab my
attention that weekend). Also, you may see waitress near you in one or two weeks, it seems to have momentum.

I was pretty dissaponted by this, but the thing with me is, there are movies I know I'm going to like, so really, the only thing I have to look foward to about it is enjoying it, its box office, and the critics.

gimme a f**g brake! the 2d part was garbage! nothing more than a greatest hits collection of the first one (IT EVEN ENDS THE SAME!) and they thought that the 3d part will be BETTER?! Shrek represents everything is wrong with US animted movies nowadays. Stupid piece of s**t.

I thought the third movie was great! The critics always bash third films, it's a tradition for them. And remember, generally, this is supposed to be a film for children/teens, and then SOME adults.

So judge it by a child's sight, instead of bashing it completely, RT.

yes, because people who are paid to give their opinions on movies as their JOB have no idea what they're talking about. yup, keep thinking you're smarter than the critics lmao

Gimy, i'm sure they'd allow a child to review shrek....if children were developed enough to write movie reviews.

Shrek the Third is not that good because threequels always suck. Shrek was my favorite animated feature and Shrek 2 is a superior sequel. Shrek the Third is the Sonic the Hedgehog Next-Gen of animated features. It's sad seeing one of my favorite franchises face the downfall.

My young sister really didn't like it (who is developed on being critical on movies).
