Based on a story by Ryotaro Shiba, this samurai classic from director Masahiro Shinoda follows a mysterious samurai leader who continuously shifts his allegiance from one political faction to another. A masterpiece of cinematic storytelling, matching a jigsaw-like economy of construction to a wide variety of visual styles, while never being anything less than gripping.
this film knocked me out. a little seen masterpiece of the samurai genre, it follows a clever ronin in the tense days after the landing of comodore perry's ships at edo in 1853, and subsequent civil war between the shogun and the emperor. a dark view of japanese history with magnificent b&w cinematography
