Seth Rogen Not Bothered By Nerds Whining About His Green Hornet
Hopes to make something "not like any superhero movie."
by Jeff Giles | November 29, 2007
Discuss Article
If you greeted the news of Seth Rogen starring in a new Green Hornet movie less than enthusiastically, you were not alone -- something Rogen is aware of, and to his credit, not terribly concerned about.

Speaking with MTV Movies, Rogen sums up the online response to his plans for Green Hornet as follows:

"[The fan reaction] was a little surprising. I love the idea! I think it's going to be a unique and interesting movie," the jocular always-self-deprecating Rogen announced, before adding with a laugh, "but nerds love complaining. You go on Ain't It Cool News, and everybody complains about everything. They could find out Jesus Christ was making a movie with Frank Miller, and they'd say, 'That's a terrible combination!' "

Describing his Hornet vision as "not like any superhero movie...more like a regular action movie," Rogen says that he and co-writer Evan Goldberg have prepared two outlines for the film -- one comedic, the other less so -- but admits that "it's really hard to wrap our head around the movie until we've written the script," something that will have to wait until the writers' strike is resolved.

And what about the idea that Rogen and Goldberg shouldn't be trying to write an action movie at all? Again, Rogen understands the skepticism, but tells MTV that fans should wait until they see his next movie, The Pineapple Express, described in the article as "a high-octane action/comedy."

That is definitely true. Ain't It Cool is a cacophony of whining and moaning.

yes nerds complain, but thats a crucial part of the movie making process these days... some ideas hollywood have are so ridiculous (e.g. jack black and his green lantern spoof movie), that SOMEBODY has to complain...

as for green hornet and seth rogen... ive never seen anything involving green hornet, so i dont particularly care

i don't think nerds complaining IS necessary, because if studios listened to them...they'd probably not make a profit. look how many nerds HATE spidey 3 yet look how much it made. same with Fantastic Four.

just entertain me and i'm happy. i don't care if its just ripping off a name and making it his own...as long as its entertaining to watch, its all good.

As for Green Hornet, Seth Rogen writing the script will be amazing. Kevin Smith probably wouldn't have sold the rights to the script if Rogen wasn't a true fan.

Need I say more...

Yes, you need to say more. Is Rogen starring AS the Green Hornet? I mean, really, complaining isn't surprising here--the problem is obvious isn't it? A FAT Green Hornet? I just looked it up, and he says he's going to get buff for the role. More power to him if he actually pulls that off.

Gimy, I have to agree with you. They can't listen to the nerds for that exact reason. Things change in the movie making process--things that work in the minds of a select group of individuals (nerds) that simply don't work on screen.

That said, Spidey 3 sucked but they probably laughed all the way to the bank.

honestly, im with everyone else on this one - Seth Rogen has no business playing the green hornet, hes made a few screwball comedies, i dont think hes ready for a full feature, but its only the green hornet after all - he can butcher it all he wants im never gonna watch it.

this is just crazy enough to work. you can't treat green hornet like another superhero movie because the character doesn't resonate with the today's youth like a spider-man or batman does. It's a more obscure character than most, so you need an equally atypical actor. if the suits let rogen and eisenbreg have some fun with this one, it's gonna be legit.

Kevin Smith = Criminally Overrated ****ty Director
Seriously, I cant believe they still let him make movies; all he does is recycle the same old characters; All that clerks had goin for it was the fact it came out when indie movies started picking up steam again.

Perhaps, BUT, Imagine how much money those films would have made if they were actually great movies?

How many dvd sales will they make? How many repeat theatre watches will they receive? They made lots of bucks yes, but thats all they will make, because most who saw them WONT be seeing them again and again.

The last time the studio listened to complaining nerds, "Snakes on a Plane" tanked at the box office. Since it's all about the bottom line, there's not much danger of that anymore. And I think Rotten Tomatoes is just about as bad as AICN with the whining and complaining, to be honest.

Way to ostracize the "Hornet" fanbase Rogen! It's not like they don't know the characters and stories better than you....

I don't really give a crap about Green Hornet, but it's not very encouraging when the re-creators of an established franchise start off by snubbing the biggest fans. Taking a character that's only resided in the loving memories of it's fans for decades and saying "F*** you! I'll do what I want with Green Hornet" is just pure arrogance.

I have no knowledge at all about the Green Hornet, but no character is supposed to exist as a relic in people's memories. I'm glad that Seth Rogen is actually doing something creative, unlike 90% of hollywood. If the nerds had their way, movies would be a live action version of the comic books. Nobody wants to see that (except them).

I don't know about "nobody" wanting to see that laika86. If my memory serves me corretly 300 was a live action version of a comic book and was one of the best damn movies in years not to mention that plenty of regular (non-nerd) people watched (and loved) it.
And to be honest about the Green Hornet, the only character I realy give a damn about is who is going to be Bruce Lee's character Kaito, and will the fighting be good.

Green hornet has fans? whens the last time he had a comic book out ? and how well did it sell?
does anyone remember what happened to The Shadow or the Phantom?
campy or un- campy it doesn't matter it wont sell either way so if Rogen wants to make it the way he wants to (chubby jewish funny guy fighting crime with a stereotypical asian sidekick?) it won't really matter.
honestly it just seems to me like a lot of ego stroking to me since he doesn't seem to care for the original material.

Xenogears, are you serious? 300 "one of the best damn movies in years"? 300 was a fairly good movie, nothing more. Have you been to the theaters recently to see a movie like Sunshine or Bourne Ultimatum or 1408 or Ratatouille or the Simpsons Movie or Rescue Dawn or... need I go on?
Also, sure, if nerds had their way, the movie would be accurate to the comic books down to the last detail... but what kind of entertainment value would that have to everyone who isn't a nerd?

I really dislike Seth Rogen, and while not a Green Horner fan, per se, I will probably forgo watching this movie simply because he is involved in it.
I think it is great that nerds complain; it's just like all the guys on the sports forums who know what's best for their team, and it is nice to feel like we can have some kind of impact on movies as they are being made, but of course Hollywood will go with the bottom line and ignore the nerds.

Eat.Before.We.Eat.You:
You answered your own question "what kind of entertainment value would that have to everyone who isn't a nerd?" 300 entertained plenty of folks, nerds and norms alike, so there you have it.

However, that does not mean that every comic could be filmed frame for frame, but it is important to get as much as the source material into the movie. Spiderman and Batman Begins both did this, and while they were not frame by frame they resulted in some pretty darn good movies.
