Two More Tyler Perry Films Coming, Including Another Madea
Studio to continue aiding Perry's box-office reign.

Some critics have turned up their noses at his films, but there's no denying Tyler Perry's commercial track record at the box office -- a winning streak that Lionsgate has just rewarded with a new two-picture deal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has acquired the rights to Perry's next two films (titled The Family That Preys Together and Madea Goes to Jail) for an undisclosed sum. Keeping with tradition, Perry will write, direct, and star in both movies. From the article:

"Madea Goes to Jail"...is an adaptation of Perry's play about a series of events that occur after Madea spends a night in jail. Both films are scheduled to begin production in the spring.

" 'The Family That Preys Together' and 'Madea Goes to Jail' are going to deliver everything audiences have come to expect from a Tyler Perry production: humor, uplift and unlimited heart and soul," said Michael Paseornek, president of film production at Lionsgate.

Perry's most recent release, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?, opened at Number One with a $21.4 million gross last month.

More power to him. I find that his films and directing are getting better each time. It is too bad that the critics really don't get him or his films.

Oh jesus, more blackxplotation flicks? What's the next one going to be called?

Tyler Perry presents Tyler Perry's Tyler Perry, Featuring Tyler Perry as Tyler Perry?

Seriously, there is a lack of good films for the black community. I don't know why this is overlooked, there is quite a lot of money to be made there

ItchyBarracuda - What the hell are you talking about? Do you know what a black exploitation film is because the films he makes certainly are not it. Those are films made by non-african americans to put down an entire race. Tyler Perry is trying to lift an entire race. And though there are some stereotypes in his films, he only uses them to make the films relate closer to his audiance. If you even saw "Why did I get Married" all the characters are succesfull in there fields. Hardly sterotypical. Stop being ignorant and give credit when credit is due. Hollywood is giving credit to far worse.

Underoath18, you read my mind. The Madea movies are atrocious. They're like a bad mix of Vim Varney as Ernest and some wierdo guy as Dame Edna. Considering how bad Ernest and Dame Edna are, a bad version of them makes for WORST. MOVIE. FRANCHISE. EVER!

Tyler Perry should go to jail for "Madea's Family Reunion".

I have to say, the Madea movies are the nadir of Tyler Perry's film career and if he just gave them up and focused on his semi-decent semi-successful films like "Why Did I Get Married?", he might actually get somewhere, financially or in terms of quality (I would prefer the latter, since this year has been proving, more than ever, that movies that make a lot of money aren't necessarily good).

The Family That...Preys...Together? Wow, I am amused and confused. That's either a typo or some sort of African American Texas Chainsaw Massacre-style slasher film. Or maybe he doesn't realize 'prey' is not the same word as 'pray'.

More power to him, at least he gets people to go see his movies and the black community like and support his movies. White people don't see **** in the theaters, even if it is a quality film like Gone Baby Gone, Assasination of Jesse James, or Eastern Promises.

i think he's steadily getting better. i think his first films needed a little work, but i still appreciate the messages behind them. hate all you want but the man will probably be a billionaire by 2012, no matter what you think of his movies.

Tyler Perry is overrated at best and at worst we have him to thank for nearly every other black comic dressing in drag to be "funny" in their movies AND playing multiple characters... Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrences.... Argh.

Ernest Goes to... is a great analogy for Tyler Perry's movies.

I'm all for people from ALL different walks of life sharing their stories with the world. Just make the stories a little more interesting than a self-indulgent narcissistic make out fest with yourself.

One thing that I really don't understand is the need for legitimately talented african american directors/actors feeling the need to dress up as women or play multiple characters in their movies.

Eddie Murphy's multiple character/in drag thing was somewhat funny at one point, to be fair. Then he started being unfunny with it and Tyler Perry and Martin Lawrence were never funny with it in the first place, which is how we ended up where we are now.

Ugh! I can't stand Tyler Perry or his stupid movies. I am a Black woman is sick to death of all the negative stereotypes about Blacks. I cannot relate to any of his movies and I am sure his new ones will just be more of the same. I like talented Black actors like Moragan Freeman and Forrest Whitaker that shine in excellent movies with mixed casts. Until Black filmakers and writes come up with better material, I won't waste my money on these moronic and mediocre movies.
