Total Recall: Adam Sandler's Worst to Best

Which movies tickled the critics' medulla oblongata?

This week, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, the tale of a Mossad agent who goes undercover as a hairdresser, hits theaters. Adam Sandler's latest inspired us here at RT to take a closer look at the career of one of recent cinema's most popular comic actors.

Though he's won plenty of affection from his work on Saturday Night Live and his cheerfully lowbrow films, Sandler has never been a critics' darling. However, to his legion of fans, Sandler's movies are like a warm blanket; playing lovable wiseguys, surrounded by oddball friends (usually Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi, Allen Covert, and the late, great Chris Farley), the Sandman mixes potty humor and pathos with aplomb. And as his career has evolved, Sandler has won praise for attempting to stretch his on-screen persona into more difficult territory, depicting emotionally troubled, vulnerable characters with strength and depth. Check out our retrospective of Sandler's career, counting down from his worst-reviewed movie to his best.

18. Bulletproof (1996)
Tomatometer: 8%
Box office: $21.1 million

Bulletproof stars Sandler as Archie, a hood working for a drug kingpin. His best friend Jack (Damon Wayans) is an undercover cop, looking to bust up the whole enterprise. After Jack tries to arrest Archie, he's shot in the head; Archie eventually skips town, but decides to testify against his boss, so Jack agrees to escort him cross country. Together, the two must outwit a group of assassins while working out their hostilities. Like 48 Hours, Bulletproof was designed as a vehicle for a young comedian (in this case, two young comedians) to break into action-buddy-comedy territory.

However, the result was the worst-reviewed film of Sandler's career; critics pegged it as middling and predictable, despite a few funny moments. "A few stray laughs here and there, but both comedians have done a whole lot better," wrote Scott Weinberg of efilmcritic.com.

17. Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights (2002)
Tomatometer: 13%
Box office: $23.3 million

Why should Christian kids have all the fun? In celebrating his Jewish heritage, Sandler has made contributions to seasonal merriment both sublime ("The Chanukah Song") and forgettable (Eight Crazy Nights). The latter, an animated musical, written, produced, and featuring voice work from the Sandman, tells the tale of Davey, a drunken misanthrope who becomes a youth basketball coach to satisfy his community service requirements. Under the guidance of kindly old Whitey and Eleanore, Davey learns a thing or two about the holiday spirit -- but not before wreaking havoc on his small town.

Indeed, critics found Eight Crazy Nights to be less than heartwarming; David Keyes of Cinephille.org called it "a shallow, crude, mean-spirited and painfully unfunny excursion into lunacy."

Adam sandler was funny at one time, but now all of his movies are the same. He plays some character with a problem, finds a girl, offends the girl, and eventually ends up with her in the end. Oh, and usually Rob Schnieder, Norm Mcdonald, John McEnroe, John Turturro, Steve Bushemi, Henry Wrinkler make in appearance. It is getting Old! Happy Gilmore is a classic

Yep Happy Gilmore is his best movie by a long shot. Billy Madison is his most overrated. Boring flick.

RT actually could've done a best to worst and simply listed Adam Sandler's movies chronologically starting with Billy Madison, his alltime best movie

Some guy you dont know on 06-4-2008 04:45 PM

Punch Drunk Love is his only abover-average film.

That being said it's quite the masterpiece.

Wow....the sandler only has 3 fresh movies!? And only two of them weren't produced by his camp.

jomo999 on 06-4-2008 05:17 PM

what's the point of this list - it's less 'best to worst' than 'terrible to average' though i did kind of like happy gilmore...yeah go ahead and call me stupid.

It takes until page 8 for him to even have a fresh movie. Adam Sandler has never been very funny. Wake up, people. I admit I kinda liked Happy Gilmore, but it came out when I was in 6th grade and thought telling Bob Barker, "The price is wrong, *****" is funny.

Punch Drunk Love is the only good movie he's made, and that's because PT Anderson understands how to use him.

I used to laugh at a friend who, based on one bad movie, refuses to watch anything--anything!--with Nicholas Cage.

Then I watched Eight Crazy Nights and Big Daddy, and now I can't even watch SNL. It's a shame, because Reign Over Me and Punch Drunk Love look quite good.

Jesus people....with all of your "punch drunk love yapping!" Sandler was good in it but the film blew. As far as Billy Madison and Gilmore, yes, they are awesome. Beer comdey with a little poop humor goes a long way. As for the rest of his so called "films," eh hem.

Ya when it comes to his dramatic films like Punch-Drunk Love, Sandler shows his true talent, but his new comedies (i.e. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry) haven't been as funny as they used to (i.e. the hilarious Happy Gilmore).

I've always felt Airheads and Bulletproof were underrated. But Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are Sandler's masterpieces.

Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are two very funny movies..... i was very surprised with his preformance in reign over me and punch drunk love and those are easily two of his best movies besides Gilmore and Madison.... other than that, a lot of his movies are just the same, i mean his movies can be fun, but they aren't worth no more than a rental (if even that) but their sort of worth seeing once.... either way i have no interest in zohan, and shall see love guru instead :P

Wait so you think the Love Guru is funny but not Zohan? Are you insane? Man you have to love uptight nerds that only think that Seth Rogan and his pothead humor is funny.

The most inaccurate post Ive seen today, 1. Mike Myers > Adam Sandler. As much as I love Sandman Mike is a better writer and comedien 2. Your right Seth Rogan's pothead humor is not funny... It's hilarious! And that's not just from me, that's coming from critics and most fans.

I love Reign Over Me (such an underrated movie), as well as staples from when I was a kid: Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. The Wedding Singer isn't a bad film, and Bulletproof actually has its moments.

What's incredible is just how much hype his new movie is getting, even though it is a bland and lame film, akin to pretty much all of his movies, save a couple. He isn't humorous but for some reason these movies get made anyway. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were funny then, but they pale in comparison to many films of late. It's annoying more than anything.

Personally I like Adam Sandler's movies for the most part. Obviously their not all too good or all too funny for that matter but they are good for some laughs and to maybe have a good time with some friends while watching.

Most of his movies and characters are the same but when I see a new movie of his where hes the same character again I just think of it as a new story for his character. Kinda like a sitcom except in each movie he has a different name but basically has the same friends around him which makes it feel more like different episodes of a show rather than different movies. Thats just how I see his movies. But yes a good bit of his movies are bad like Bulletproof, Little Nicky, and Mr. Deeds were probably his worst ones.

I don't understand why RT made this article. Why give us the critics' views? We already know they hate Sandler. But since when do the critics know anything? Billy Madison is one of the funniest movies of all time. Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy are all classic comedies as well, as far as I'm concerned. Airheads was also good, but he wasn't the main star. Other than that Sandler's movies range from "Meh" to "HolyCrapTerrible." Especially his serious films - I don't know what Adam Sandler fan wants to see that kind of boring crap. I doubt that person exists. Unfortunately, it appears Sandler's career was all downhill from Billy Madison and I think Zohan will continue that trend. The trailer made me wince. Don't worry Sandman, no matter what you do, you'll always be Billy Madison to me.

for you or anyone to call Big Daddy and Waterboy "classic comedies" is ridiculous - unless you are 11 and watched it at a sleepover where you all farted in your sleeping bags and howled with laughter (along with these "classic comedies"). God forbid anyone watch Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder or Preston Sturges if you want to see CLASSIC comedies. If you want moronic, paint by numbers movies than yes, by all means, watch Waterboy or Little Nicky or Mr. Deeds.....

JakeTheSnakeMane

JakeTheSnakeMane on 06-4-2008 11:53 PM

I'm a big Sandler fan and I enjoyed all 3 of his more serious movies. Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me are 2 of my favorites. And Spanglish I though was also pretty good at least better than some of his lamer comedies.

RawIsRamsey

RawIsRamsey on 06-5-2008 12:05 AM

I wouldn't call Big Daddy a "classic comedy" ever. Neither should you.

Anyone else think its kinda funny that he hasn't been in any $200 mil blockbusters? Just seems an actor who always has a summer comedy tentpole would have pulled in the big one...closest he's gotten is $163 mil for Big Daddy (good lord, why?).

And whoever mentioned The Love Guru, Zohan, and Seth Rogan in the same sentence deserves to be shot...Rogan doesn't deserved to be lumped in with those two idiots...Seth can actually write (and it's not just pothead jokes, no matter how hilarious they are).

P'city Psycho

P'city Psycho on 06-5-2008 08:00 PM

Huh? The fact that Sandler hasn't been in one of the biggest summer movies of the year has never crossed my mind. I doubt many of his fans even consider him a box office juggernaut. But I guess he must be a failure if none of his films have ever grossed 200 mil . Give me a break. He's not in those kind of films, and it's rare for any sort of comedy to break that barrier.
