Critic Review - Creative Loafing

Exactly the type of movie the GOP would rather Americans not see, as it individualizes (rather than demonizes) its foreign characters and provides them with a collective voice that demands to be heard.

So at least we can agree, the GOP is the only political party that cares about border security and sane immigration policy.

If Tarik had been an out of work illegal, driving drunk without a license on a snowy interstate in Upstate New York and suddenly T-bones YOU, a victim of circumstance, you might feel different Matt. Happens every day...more often than this sob story for sure.

But how would we know the difference when the illegal foreigner arrived on our shore? Hmm..the makings of a circular argument...I don't know maybe enforcing immigration laws might do it...maybe a set of objective rules that, while not necessarily demonizing individuals, also doesn't get bogged down in a case-by-case miasma involving millions of people. Just a rational policy. Sounds like a way better policy than the touchy-feely mess you seem to imply would work better only because it might be supported by the GOP boogeymen.

The gall of this movie's point is breathtaking...that somehow America is once again the bad guy for trying to enforce OUR OWN immigration laws. IN OUR OWN COUNTRY...we're made to look like the villains...and you just lap it up, accept the premise on face value without any deeper intellectual investigation.

The subplot is equally offensive...that Walter, emblem of all Americans that he is by virtue of the fact that he's the only American in the film that says more than a few lines, is only pretending...but is annointed with all the benefits of citizenship...which he clearly doesn't deserve as much Tarik, his girlfriend or his mother. So the subplot is Americans waste their liberty by refusing to live intensely and as such have grown unappreciative of that liberty and thus are found so lacking in sufficient Americaness that we're all just coasting? What a crock...but again you lap it all up, somberly nodding your head in self-loathing agreement.

No, despite great character development and great acting...this movie is terrible. And any clear thinking individual that bothered to see past facade of the sob story ended that movie with a sour taste.

Matt, you have to get better at your job. Analyze what the writer and director wanted you to take away from this flick and then bounce those points off some objective experience...when you finally get some. Or at least stick to things that deal with the movie process like character development, score, costuming...stuff like that...but please stay away from deeper meaning until you find some.

Have you lost your mind??? You know this movie is not about that right?? Despite good acting and good directing and a great story and a great script....etc. Yeah, i guess if you take those things away it's not a good movie, but sense it has all those things you need to shut your stupid mouth!!
