If you can say that "It's difficult, perhaps impossible, to make a gripping 137-minute epic about people standing around under the trees".
Perhaps you would compare Gone with the Wind, considered to be the most celebrated films of it's time that won 8 Oscars, to a romance novel.
Also being about the civil war, which was, prior to WWII, "one of the most tragic and ghastly events in human history" which also ended on an upbeat.
Allow me to pull the wool from over your eyes.
This is a movie of hope.
As it says Out of Conflict comes Courage, out of Battle ... Brotherhood, out of Desperation Defiance.

100% agreement with all that has been said. Perhaps you dozed through the exciting and inspiring scenes. The special features on the DVD was icing on the cake, but this critic would probably found them boring.Dpn. W.

Mark, Instead of being witty or insightful, your comment only exposes your shallowness. If you can't be moved by this story, and the way it's told here - stick to cartoons - that would seem to be right up your alley.

Didn't you pay attention? They were standing under trees because Disneyland was closed during the war.
