Box Office Guru Wrapup: Mission Accomplished For G-Force
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Ugly Truth round out the top three.

This weekend audiences shifted their attention from teen wizards to talking guinea pigs as Disney's 3D action film G-Force pulled an upset at the North American box office knocking Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince out of the top spot in its second weekend. The Hogwarts flick fell sharply but still pulled in a solid gross and continued its sensational run around the world. Mature audiences came out in impressive numbers for the Katherine Heigl-Gerard Butler comedy The Ugly Truth which opened well in third place.

Families rushed to multiplexes to see adorable talking animals as G-Force powered its way to the top spot with an estimated $32.2M from an ultrawide release in 3,697 theaters. Averaging a healthy $8,697 per theater, the PG-rated action-adventure about guinea pig government spies connected with family audiences and took advantage of higher-priced tickets from its 1,600 3D locations. With almost $500M spent this summer on 3D toons Up and Ice Age, kids and parents were ready to move on to a live-action film that still offered clean and fun entertainment for children of all ages. The Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer brand names also added some weight.

G-Force continued the studio's great summer following Up and The Proposal which also debuted at number one. The trio could end up grossing a powerful $550M or more combined.

Dropping to second place was the film most expected to top the charts, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which grossed an estimated $30M in its second weekend. The wizard sequel fell a steep 62% which was completely expected given the last film's 58% sophomore drop. After 12 days, the newest Potter has banked an impressive $221.8M putting it 7% ahead of the pace of 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which stood at $207.9M at the same point in its run. Factoring in ticket price increases, the two films have sold an identical amount of tickets over their first 12 days, although Prince did it with virtually no IMAX sales. Phoenix grossed a slightly better $32.5M in its second frame.

With the bulk of its IMAX run to start this Wednesday, Half-Blood Prince could be on its way to a domestic total of $300M or a bit more. Overseas, the new Hogwarts tale fell sharply but still led the international box office with a muscular $84.4M from over 16,000 screens in 64 markets boosting the overseas total to an eye-popping $405.3M and the worldwide tally to a stunning $627.1M. The dazzling performance this weekend led to two major milestones -- Warner Bros. smashed the $1 billion mark in overseas box office for 2009 and the Harry Potter franchise shattered the $5 billion mark across its six films in eight years. The series has grossed $5.1 billion and counting and should reach at least $5.4 billion with two more installments still to come.

Sony targeted the date crowd and scored an impressive opening for its romantic comedy The Ugly Truth which bowed in the third slot with an estimated $27M from 2,882 theaters. The R-rated pic averaged a strong $9,368 which was tops among films in the top ten. It also underscored the growing box office clout of Katherine Heigl who enjoyed a $23M debut last year anchoring the comedy 27 Dresses. Studio research showed that 62% of the audience was female while 64% was over 25. Adult women and couples have had no new films specifically for them over the past month as most movies have targeted kids, teens, or the action crowd. The lack of competition helped the $38M production overcome horrible reviews from critics and last week's sneak previews helped to spread advance buzz.

The new horror title Orphan performed moderately in its debut grossing an estimated $12.8M from 2,750 locations this weekend. Bowing in fourth place with a decent $4,644 average, the R-rated thriller about a creepy girl adopted by unsuspecting parents performed much like past fright flicks like One Missed Call and The Eye which opened to $12.4M and $12.5M, respectively.

Fox's hit toon Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs lost audiences and 3D screens to the guinea pigs this weekend and suffered its worst decline yet falling 53% to an estimated $8.2M. With a solid $171.3M in the bank, a final gross close to the $195.3M of Ice Age: The Meltdown and $197.8M of this spring's 3D flick Monsters vs. Aliens still seems likely. Overseas, Dawn shattered the half-billion mark with an estimated $40.6M this weekend from 102 markets for an international cume of $505.4M and a dizzying global tally of $676.7M.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen fell out of the top five in its fifth weekend, but it did climb into the All-Time Top 10 list. The robot sequel scored an estimated $8M, down 42%, boosting the total to $379.1M after 33 days of release. That puts Michael Bay's critically-panned testosterone flick at number 10 on the list of all-time domestic blockbusters bumping off Oscar champ The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King which took in $377M in 2003 and 2004. The Peter Jackson adventure sold more tickets though since ticket prices have increased since then. Reaching $400M should not be a problem for em>Transformers which will end up selling about as many tickets as 1997's Men in Black, another summer sci-fi smash executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

A week away from joining the All-Time Top 50, The Hangover enjoyed yet another solid frame grossing an estimated $6.5M, off just 21%, giving Warner Bros. a $247.1M total. A hair behind in eighth place was another successful summer comedy The Proposal which slipped only 23% to an estimated $6.4M for a $140.1M cume. This is the sixth straight weekend that the two comedies were side-by-side on the charts although Sandra Bullock spent the first five times on top.

Universal rounded out the top ten with the gangster drama Public Enemies with an estimated $4.2M and the fashionista pic Brüno with an estimated $2.7M. The Johnny Depp vehicle fell 46% raising the sum to $88.1M while the Sacha Baron Cohen pic tumbled 67% for a $56.5M cume.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $138M which was down 19% from last year when The Dark Knight stayed in the top spot with $75.2M; and also down 19% from 2007 when The Simpsons Movie debuted at number one with $74M.

What I find interesting that NOBODY is talking about is the foriegn gross for Ice Age - 500 million!!! That is astonishing, while it may have performed decently in America, if you factor in the international gross, Ice Age is like the 3rd or 4th most successful film this season, it easily beat out Up and Monsters vs. Aliens.

Disappointed seeing G-Force win the weekend but I expected that it might. Got to see The Hurt Locker which was incredible and I really hope it finds an audience. Funny People next weekend, really looking forward to that.

I know, Ray Ramono is like the new age Jerry Lewis or something!

Its just weird because most comedies don't translate well overseas - take 'The Hangover' for example. Its still raking in business after a month of release, pretty damn good for a comedy, but overseas, it only took in about a quarter of its total gross(350mil).

Even 'Up' performed poorly overseas - only 50mil! People always complain about americans being unsophisticated, but then they ignore the tour de force that was Up and flocked to the highly inferior Ice Age. I just don't understand it.

to add to your point CtrlAltDestroy, look how well Terminator Salvation did overseas...

With G-Force winning this weekend, the summer movie season is officially over for me...well maybe until Funny People is released on friday...then it's all about "Where the Wild Things Are?"

I'm not much of a Harry Potter fan, never was. Couldn't finish the first book or the first movie; just wasn't my preference. But at least it was an original idea, unlike G-Force. I was expecting Harry Potter to kind of shrug off that dumb-@$$ guinea pig movie and keep raking in millions, but apparantly kids would rather see "cool 3-D effects" than Quidditch and what-not.

I am kind of happy that audiences are noticing the trend of horror movies lately with "Orphan". The trend being that they are the same rehashed movie again, and again, and again. And again. Either a remake, a sequel, a sequel to a remake, or horror movie borrowing from other movies. Maybe some new writers can step up and make something original.

"Yeah, it's going to drop off like Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen. I mean, it'd be lucky to do any kind of repeat business with the negative word of mouth it's getting from "discouraged" fans. Too bad, because it was a great movie, even though it required prior knowledge and isn't a carbon copy of the book. Those flaws are far outweighed by the positives."

Yep.

So anyway, who believes Funny People is going to win the box office next week? Is the trailer lacking something, or is it just me? Not only that, but how many people are going to go see a two and half hour drama/comedy? I mean, I have a hard time seeing this pulling a Knocked-Up.

I agree with "CtrlAltDestroy". But only partially. Up hasn't done poorly overseas. It's just been opened in the major markets. The only market that you can really compare is Russia, where Ice Age did good compared to Up. But it is the market of sequels. You can check that allmost all high grossing not domestic movies are sequels, remakes, and so on. So in order to compare two movies, Up and Ice Age 3, you have to wait up to the end of the year, when Up will open in the final major market, Japan, sometime in December. This upcoming week it is going to open in a few major markets including France and Spain. Let's see what will happen.
I laughed a lot when I watching Ice Age, but Up works in much more deep emotional level and delivers huge massage to kids, their parents, and everybody else.

Like I posted already - I'm not surprised that G-farce did so well, the Disney machine is too powerful to not succeed with making kids go, "Awwwwww." I know it's just a revenue-stream flick that has to be made - otherwise how is Mr. Bruckheimer going to afford his other movies? But couldn't SOMEONE have done something else??? I know! We'll make a movie about flies that get stuck in a spaceship flown by a bunch of monkeys headed to save a planet of iguana-humans fighting a terrible cliché spitting warmonger giant-killer-robots... and we'll do it in 4-D, one better than Disney is doing!

saw the hurt locker, it was great. My parents went to the ugly truth, and my dad said, "well it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be," which is a pretty big endorsement from him.

On a random side note I rented that new "Street Fighter" movie this weekend, and it my be the worst thing I've ever seen.

"G-Force" is the highest grossing film of the weekend. I made a deal with the Devil, "G-Fore" isn't number one at the box-office, and he gets my soul. And worldwide box-office, "G-Force" was not...but it was in America. SATAN!!!! You fooled me again! Damn you America!

I bet a lot of movies would love to "Fall off" like Transformers ROTF. It fell off into the top ten grossing movie's of all time. Quality issue's aside which has been beaten to death when that many people see a movie opening weekend it's only natural that it fall off significantly in its second week. The only movies where this isn't the case are great movie's like TDK or freakish cultural phenomena like Titanic. Say what you want about Transformers. Yes it's a critical flop, and no it's not going to be on anyone's favorite movies of all times list in 10 years, but financial failure isn't a tag you can slap on it by any definition. Potter will end up 300 mil range domestically and 1 Bil range internationally just like they all have. Doesn't take a Nostradamus to pick that.

I just realized why G-Force is the Box-Office winner this week.

Two words: Nicolas Cage.

He does voice work for this movie. And I've noticed that, lately, a lot of movies he has starred in have been previous box-office winners . . . even though they're not very good. I can maybe understand the success of Ghost Rider, but also Knowing AND Bangkok Dangerous? Come on. I don't think people do this conciously; it's just a cosmic thing.

And, @ ledawg: You can get your soul back if you play the fiddle better than he can. I heard about that from a Czechoslovakian folk tale.

lol, your using the popularity of Hollywood films to judge a nations sophistication. I can tell you though, in Australia, it has a lot to do with marketing. It's the better marketed films that prosper. It's probably much the same everywhere, but being a smaller market, only the sequels/blockbusters get the big marketing push.

another talking animal movie hitting it big at the box office. i guess we shouldn't be surprised after Beverly Hills Chihuahua did so well last year. i guess that's the easiest, lowest-common denominator way to make a bankable film other than putting Eddie Murphy in a fat suit.

not surprised bu the Harry Potter's decline. the Harry Potter craze is over, replaced by Twilight. and the bulk of the Harry Potter fanbase saw the movie last week.

WB doesnt care.... they're already ****ing rich... if Potter opened in the weekend last week not on wednesday, they'll probably end up in $40-50 mil for the second weekend...

glad T2:RoTF won't reach TDK... before, Bay doesnt really bugs me. i know he's not that good of a director, but he doesnt really irritates me. after transformer 2, i understand the hate.

hope Funny People gets huge bucks and award consideration... even just for Sandler- Best Actor, Leslie Mann-Best Supporting Actress, and Judd Apatow-Best Original Screenplay. no need for best picture, just those 3 to make this Judd's great entry to Drama with a Little Comedy...

ps. Potter would probably end up near $300m... which is great... the saddess news is that the best potter, azkaban, was the least grossing film... i think that's one of the reasons producers didn't hire Cuaron back

Mr. Spielberg, shame on you! you should be the one who's not producing horrible films... whatever happened to your goal at Dreamworks, "helping smart filmakers make it big?" now you're one of those greedy producers... i still love you as a director, but i hate you as a producer! you should have fired Bay when you had a chance!. everything wrong about hollywood is in T2:RoTF. and i think, with this box-office success, it will continue.
