Josh Larsen
As a companion piece to a Bible study group this may have some merit, but it doesn't belong in a theater. [More]

what does belong in a theatre then? probably something more entertaining for you right? like topless girls? or people shooting each other up and cussing btween every word? either you are too immature and easily entertained that you don't appreciate a story that is real and genuine without nudity and violence or you are offended by the message of this movie, it is not your place to say it has no place in the theatres, when millions have already enjoyed viewing it there.

I agree with Maggie. There's nothing but trash out in the theaters anymore. I'm so sick of so-called "God-based" movies getting the shaft. No one ever gets in an uproar about the immoral movies that are shoved down our throat everyday. It's about time there's something wholesome out there.

Uh, why doesn't this belong in the theaters? Is it b/c it doesn't have gore everywhere? Or maybe it's missing all the violence, sex,and immoral people you love. It's also missing all those 4-5 letter words that you probably hear all the time. Look, I'm only 13, but I don't go to movies that are wrong for the heart and for the mind. I don't mean to sound rancor or bitter, but why do all the movies with an amazing theme/plot, or Christian movies, always get put down? Is it b/c people are afraid to admit that something with a Godly voice in it actually has a point? That it's able to relate to us? This can benefit many couples that are being separated. It is so easy for people to get a divorce with out any real reason or clause. I feel terrible about it, and for the other people that get affected too. People always seem to write off Christian supposed shows w/o giving them a fair chance. I'm praying for all the people that do this. I pray that God opens their eyes, ears, and hearts to His Word, and his message. Amen, God Bless. =] PS I love this movie =]

Why post the same exact thing that three other people have said? I agree totally. If this doesn't belong in a theater then I don't think I'm going to be visiting theaters much anymore.

I think he was referring more to the way the movie was crafted, rather than subject matter. It definitely looked straight to video to me, just from the ads. I'm not a Christian, and had absolutely no desire to see this movie, but I can understand why this group would want to put some movies out there to try and tap into that market.

Julie D,
I hope you come to know the Lord before your days on earth ends. I haven't seen the movie yet just the trailer but you can bet I will be first in line to buy it January 27th. No there is no blood, guts, cursing every other word which makes this the movie of the century in my book. As for tapping into the market try it you may like it, I know I sure do. I love the Lord. Kirk Cameron was once an atheis so go to his website and listen to his personal testimony of becoming a christian it may just save your soul. God be with you in christain love.

Josh,
Sorry you are resistant to the message. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best movies ever made.

As posted by Jon C. and Maggie J. - I am in absolute agreement with you! First, FIREPROOF is one of the best films of the year, literally. In the first weeks of release, it ranked in the top 5, yes, IN THEATERS! That same week, FIREPROOF was competing with other major studio releases showing on thousands of screens, and yet, it was amazing that FIREPROOF would still find its' top ranking when it was showing on a scale of a few hundred screens (if not less). In many major states across America, it was literally showing at one single theater. AND LOOK AT THE NUMBERS - both financial profits and audience count! Without the 'big machine' and its' promotional budget, still, the PEOPLE spoke. It is amazing how the film industry, and reviewers like Josh Larsen completely miss the point! They even ignore the numbers! When a story is real, with substance, one that everyday people can relate to on a personal level, it will succeed! No need for major special effects, mega-superstar headliners, and the usual sex, violence and vulgarity. As 'beauty is in the eyes of a beholder', so is it that a 'review' will simply reveal the character, substance and depth of its' 'reviewer'. My point is far from religious standpoints, or shoving the ideals of Christianity down anyone's throat. Although, I find it very offensive when arrogant reviews as this are shoved down ours! Simply put, a 'good movie' will touch the heart of someone, just as FIREPROOF did for the MILLIONS who saw it! Most importantly, it's no wonder that 50% of marriage will fail... Far too long, we've had 99% of the 'Josh Larsen' types of perspectives stomping over the 1% of us who've tolerated it!

Guess Not.
Well Believe It Or Not Some People Actually Do. It Irritates Me That People These Days Say These Movies Dont Belong. But Why? Because Theres No Drugs,Alcohol,Cursing,Nudity,Or Other Immoral Things In It.
Maybe One Day You Will Wake Up And See That These Movies Are For People Like YOU!

No, the majority of people don't like it because they expect to go in and have a message pushed down their throats and have a message that everyone else is so much more self-righteous than them because they don't curse. A PG rating doesn't automatically make a good movie.

A movie can still suck and not have any offensive, violent, or vulgar material in it. Don't get knocked off your high horses though, I'm not saying this movie sucks. Definitely not the best though.

How arrogant to decide what does or doesn't belong in a theater. Welcome to liberal fascism.

Fireproof was the highest grossing independent film of 2008 with over $30 million... at a cost of just $500,000 to produce. On Sept 26-28, 2008, Fireproof made close to $7 million and was ranked 4th in box-office totals by Nielsen Wire Ratings. On Oct 3-5, 2008, Fireproof took in $4 million and was ranked 8th in box-office totals.

But Josh Larsen writes that Fireproof "... doesn't belong in a theater" while at the same time admits that "Fireproof may be full of practical wisdom..."

Why?

Certainly Josh can't argue with either the profit or "practical wisdom" of the film as measures of it success - right?

Oh... maybe the fact that Fireproof is a Christian-based film?

No! That could not be Josh's bias, could it?

I think though, in terms of showing the Christian way of doing things, though, it could have used better actors and a clear delineation between his conversion and saving his marriage, because this they rather skimped on. If you're going to make a Christian-based movie, and this church has every right to do so, then go full out. Show people how they can save their marriage beyond the "and a miracle then happens..."

People, you need to stop being so knee-jerk.

Are you guys serious? Lots of good movies these days don't have cursing or violence or sex, lots of bad movies do, and vice versa. This is just a poorly made movie.
One of my favorite movies of this last year was Up. Up was completely free of violence, sex, and cursing, but people liked it because it was well-made. I'm an atheist, but if I ever watch a Christian movie, I'll put my beliefs aside and try to see it for the quality. If it sucks, I'll hate it. If it's great, I'll love it.
And think about this... you guys probably won't like A Serious Man and you probably hate Religulous because they're both movies with messages that contradict your beliefs. Don't be so hypocritical. Put your beliefs aside and see movies for what they really are... this particular movie is a poorly made disaster.
