Once again, director Lewis Milestone adapts the work of Erich Maria Remarque, whose WWI novel, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT had been the source of the director's early masterpiece. The film stars Charles Boyer as Dr. Ravic, an outstanding German surgeon, who has come to Paris in flight from the Nazi terror. He falls in love with Joan Amadou (Ingrid Bergman) a despondent, unemployed cabaret singer, and helps to find her work. Yet, his own work is depressing enough, requiring him, as a displaced person lacking a passport, to perform "ghost" surgery, some of it illegal, for other doctors at a fraction of his previous fee. He also continues to search the city for Haake (Charles Laughton), the German agent who had tortured him years earlier and killed his mistress. But suddenly, Ravic is deported, after being caught without his passport. When he is finally able to return to Paris, he finds that Joan is the kept woman of a successful actor Alex (Stephen Bekassy), living a life of luxury. When the actor comes to the conclusion that Joan really loves Ravic, he becomes enraged with jealousy, and takes matters into his own hands. Boyer and Bergman make a moody matched pair of brooding romantics in this often underrated film. [More]
