RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Tron: Legacy and Little Fockers Opens in new window

This week on home video, there are a lot of HD re-releases of older films, like Arthur (presumably in anticipation of this week's remake), The People vs. Larry Flynt, Much Ado About Nothing, and Mystic Pizza, but they're mostly pretty standard Blu-Ray transfers. Instead we chose to focus on the new releases, like the long-anticipated sequel to Tron, the latest Narnia film, and a little-seen indie rom-com starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Then, we've also got the third installment of the Focker family follies and a Jack Abramoff biopic, of sorts, as well a Stanley Kubrick-Steven Spielberg collaboration, a critically acclaimed kid flick, and a Martin Scorsese classic on Blu-Ray. Check out the full list now! More...

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Fockers Win Ho-Ho-Hum Weekend Opens in new window

With studios dropping lumps of coal into North American multiplexes, many moviegoers stayed away over the Christmas holiday weekend as the box office fell sharply from recent years. Christmas Eve fell on a Friday helping to disrupt business, but a lack of exciting product prevented any one film from becoming a sensation. Universal saved itself from ending the year with only one number one hit with the comedy sequel Little Fockers, which topped the yuletide frame with an estimated $34M from Friday-to-Sunday. The critically panned pic grabbed $48.3M since its Wednesday debut and joined Despicable Me as the studio's only releases in 2010 to open in the top spot. Fockers averaged $9,620 from 3,536 theaters over the weekend period. Read on for the full report. More...

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Tron Cycles To The Top Opens in new window

This weekend, moviegoers flocked to the North American box office as five new films entered wide release led by the sci-fi action sequel Tron Legacy which powered its way to number one by a wide margin. The kidpic Yogi Bear settled for a mediocre debut in second while the expensive star-driven romantic comedy How Do You Know flopped finishing in eighth place. Critically acclaimed awards hopefuls The Fighter and Black Swan -- both nominated for multiple Golden Globes including Best Picture-Drama -- expanded nationwide after successful play in limited release and scored solid numbers ahead of what should be lengthy runs. Despite the absence of Avatar which opened a year ago, overall ticket sales were almost equal to last year's frame. More...

Critics Consensus: Tron Legacy Looks Great, But Feels Cold Opens in new window

This week at the movies, we?ve got a combative computer (Tron Legacy, starring Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund), buffoonish bears (Yogi Bear, starring Dan Akroyd and Justin Timberlake), a rollicking romance (How Do You Know, starring Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd), a promising pugilist (The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale), and brooding ballerinas (Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis). What do the critics have to say? Upon its release in 1982, TRON was hailed as a technical marvel; its status as one of the first films to rely prominently on computer-generated images helped to cover the fact that the plot was a little goofy. Now, the long gestating and heavily-anticipated sequel Tron Legacy is here, and critics say it has the opposite problem. More...

Total Recall: Hollywood Computing Opens in new window

Well, Tron fans, your wait for a sequel is finally almost over: this Friday, nearly three decades after puzzled filmgoers shrugged off the Disney cult classic, we get our long-delayed second dose of lightcycles, deadly discs, and skin-tight glowing bodysuits in the form of Tron Legacy. Of course, our concept of the computer (and our knowledge of what it can actually do) has changed quite a bit since 1982, but Tron actually got a lot of things right -- and to put it all in perspective, we thought it would be fun to spend this week's feature taking a look back at some other computer-driven films. Which ones came closest to reality? Which ones got things most hilariously wrong? And which ones gave us glimpses at a future we're still waiting for? It's time to boot up another edition of Total Recall! More...

It?s going to be a busy year ahead for Olivia Wilde. The former O.C. and House M.D. regular will soon be seen opposite Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig in Jon Favreau?s forthcoming sci-fi actioner Cowboys and Aliens, after which she?ll co-star with Ryan Reynolds in the comedył The Change-Up. This week, she?s appearing in a little motion picture called TRON: Legacy, Disney?s ambitious big-budget sequel to their 1982 cult classic. In it, Wilde plays Quorra, a digital warrior and prodigy of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who teams up with new hero Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) inside the Grid. We caught up with the actress recently for a quick chat about her character in the film. More...

Five Favorite Films with Michael Sheen Opens in new window

"When I start to see a path to explore for a character then I really go for it," says Michael Sheen, who describes his villain in this week's TRON: Legacy as equal parts Mae West and Ziggy Stardust. "That's part of what I really enjoy." For the film's key digital villain, Castor, the Oscar-nominated British actor dug deep into the back catalog of the Thin White Duke. "I did spend a lot of time watching Bowie," Sheen continues. "The idea behind this guy is that he's able to change and assimilate things; he's very chameleon-like, and that's what made me think of Bowie." For Sheen, a fan of the original TRON since seeing it in theaters in 1982, there's a certain amusement in the fact that Disney's massive sci-fi project revolves around the very mellow Jeff Bridges. "There's a sort of spiritual white Russian inside him all the time," Sheen laughs. "In the middle of all this technology, you know, this huge, amazing world that's been created -- and there's a lot of pressure, a lot of anticipation, a big budget, a lot riding on it and all that -- at the center of it all is The Dude. It's this guy going "Hey maaaaan." Here then, are Michael Sheen's Five Favorite Films. More...

Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner talk TRON Legacy Opens in new window

Many things have happened to Jeff Bridges in the past 28 years: he's been nominated for three Oscars and won one for Best Actor (in last year's Crazy Heart

), starred in one of the decade's biggest films (Iron Man), played a corpse (in Terry Gilliam's Tideland), and created a one-man character cult for his indelible performance as "The Dude" in the Coen brothers' The Big Lebowski (he reunites with the filmmakers this month for their version of True Grit). But for now, the actor finds himself in the somewhat unusual position of promoting a sequel to a film he made in 1982; a film that critics at the time might not have guessed would spawn a franchise. In TRON Legacy, Bridges returns as information architect Kevin Flynn, the hot-shot game designer who created "the Grid" in the original TRON. We sat down with Bridges to talk about the films, and caught up with co-star Bruce Boxleitner, who played "TRON" in the first movie and reprises his character for the sequel. More...

Tomatometer Watch: Will TRON Legacy Be Off The Grid? Opens in new window

How things change. When Disney released TRON back in 1982, the science fiction adventure -- set against an alternate reality inside a machine and using groundbreaking computer animation -- was met with an indifferent response by mainstream audiences and critics, grossing a middling $33 million at the US box office and drawing mixed reviews (as RT's 68 per cent reflects). "Does any one remember that movie TRON?" went the joke on The Simpsons; and not so long ago. But plenty of kids who saw the movie at the time -- and on video since -- were enthralled by the digital world of the Grid, and like that year's similarly underperforming Blade Runner, TRON went on to become a cult classic that has been revalued over the years for its seminal effects work. And so, 28 years later, we arrive at the sequel that many would not have expected: TRON: Legacy. Disney have been building their $200 million-dollar holiday tentpole up for some time now, with a huge marketing campaign, a buzzed about soundtrack, and numerous teasers of the new 3D visual world the filmmakers have strived to create. But how will the critics respond? Will the sequel become the unofficial victory lap the first film never received, or will it meet the same fate as its predecessor? It's too early to call at this stage, and while the film's leaning to the above-average end of the Tomatometer, the game could change as reviews start to flood in over the next week. More...

Ten Fictional Games We Wish Were Real Opens in new window

After a long week on the job, we at RT like to curl up on the couch and play an exciting game of Wrestle Jam. Or perhaps tune in to a gripping Quiddich match on TV. What's that you say? Those games don't exist? Well, we wish they did. With TRON: Legacy hitting theaters, we're compiling a list of fictional video games, board games, and sports from the movies that we wish we could play. You may wonder why we've omitted such films as The Running Man and Battle Royale from this list, but there's a good reason: we may be sick puppies, but we don't actually wish to watch human beings killing one another on television for our amusement. This is by no means a complete list, so feel free to let us know what fictional movie games you wish you could play in the comments! More...
