The slightly-too-calculated cuteness of Andrzej Jakimowski’s film didn’t induce any warm fuzziness in me, but the neatly crafted plot kept me engaged.

Reviews for Tricks
This is a sad, muted, delicately observed film with strong naturalistic performances.
Polish filmmaker Jakimowski taps into his own childhood for this engaging and warmly authentic slice of life drama. Blending comedy and a hint of magical realism, this beautiful little film really gets under the skin.
Bathed in summer light, ‘Tricks’ offers a warm portrait of childhood and attributes unusual intelligence and emotional instincts to its subjects.
A film whose well-crafted side-attractions could divert attention from the finely-tuned engine of the story, ticking away softly in the background as it carries us quietly to our destination.
A child’s-eye view of parochial Poland during a sleepy, endless summer, Tricks is handsomely photographed but defiantly lacking in drama.
At its worst, Tricks is tricksy: self-indulgent and a little twee, but at its frequent best it has an easy charm.
In common with so many Polish directors, Andrezej Jakimowski is obsessed with the peculiar magic of fate and coincidence but unlike Kieslowski, say, he avoids grandly ecstatic/gloomy set-pieces.
Sprinkled with more than a touch of the breezy charm that characterised European new wave films of the 60s, Tricks is a pleasant diversion best enjoyed on a lazy afternoon.
Andrzej Jakimowski’s gentle comedy has hazy, loopy summer charm by the bucketload, enough to make you overlook the often wayward plotting and shaky motivations.
The plot drags its feet in the film's second half, meandering towards its admittedly moving conclusion. A muted success then, but an enjoyable one nonetheless.
