Winter's Bone certainly has its redeeming qualities, particularly its cinematography and a superb lead performance by Jennifer Lawrence, but man, does it feel EMPTY until a gripping sequence near the end.
Well said! This movie is such an empty flick without little bit of story. Its story can be put in 1 line 'Girl keeps on searching for her dad for 1.40 hrs & finally finds his arm in a lake' Its the most over-rated movie of 2010. But its a well made movie with outstanding performances by Jennifer Lawrence & John Hawkes.

Yes it is empty but its supposed to be. And yet you keep watching. This is no smash-em-up movie with smart mouthed heroines living in the city and living the high life. This is LIFE. Its slow, its sometimes hopeless, and it can get real ugly. And if you've ever lived in an isolated country area, you will identify with the loneliness and desperation that you can feel. I don't even live in America but I can feel for Ree because the movie speaks of the essence of human existance and pain of life that can exist anywhere on this earth.

what a corn studded pile of crap this movie is. 4 academy nominations? worst editing I've seen in a long while. glacial , bleak and utterly flat.

Reading these comments, I have lost all hope for humanity. Yes, if the only thing you watch a movie for is plot (which everyone except Stephanie has made painfully obvious) then you probably won't like this film. But don't blame the film itself because you aren't smart enough/don't care enough to seriously analyze a film.

Don't lose hope. It's just 5 jackasses without a taste, not a big deal, I've seen it before...

Agreed. The movie hits you over the head with oblivion so many times that it runs on empty for quite a while. Could have used another edit. drop 10 minutes or so.

WINTER'S BONE it's supposed to be EMPTY as the hopes and opportunities afforded these children of the Ozarks with a dead Meth cooking father and a mother who has simply checked out.
The fact that it is EMPTY is what it is all about. A true slice of an almost unimaginable life led by the rural mountain folk of places like MO, KY, WVa and Arkansas. The incredible bravery and persistence of Ree Dolly shines out as the only way her poor siblings will ever have a chance to survive.
That makes this a brilliant picture of particular insight - not for the thrill seeking or the mindless.
