Critic Review - Chicago Sun-Times

William Goldman's script is constantly too cute and never gets up the nerve, by God, to admit it's a Western.

Well written, and Ebert makes some good points, but he underestimates the value of the film, and it makes me suspect that he entirely missed the point

I agree with Ebert. The movie is mediocre at best.

Even though this film was pretty good, I half agree with Ebert here. It was too soft for a western.

Rog, just saw it again. Love ya, but, would have easily place it amongst the top 10 of 2010. My God, no recognition of Redford-Newman, as opposed to movies part 2 part 3 part 4....???????

I actually agree with Ebert here, however I wish he'd change his mind on certain things

COMPLETELY agree. I mean, for fucks sake, EMBRACE that you're a western! Aside from the INCREDIBLE chemistry of the two leads, I absolutely did not like this movie.

Ebert is right, the ending makes film look dull, but I appreciate the art-locations of the film.

Ebert much liked "The Sting" which Newman and Redford starred in so it's all good.

I think Roger's mind is not so cemented. It does change over time as he sees something again. He's downgraded The Graduate over time, but has warmed up to the Godfather II over time since his initial good-but-not-great review. So who knows what exactly his thinking on this movie is now, since this review is 43 years old!!

My personal opinion is that there are much better westerns than this. By the time I got to this I was surprised to find out it got nominated for Best Picture, doesn't smell like a contender for that.

Ebert I know your pretty damn old but I don't think you were around back then in those days. All you know of how it was back then is from movies. Just because it doesn't have your mediocre high noon duel or Holding your bridle in your mouth yelling SOB..does not make it not a western. Your opinion is trash and you missed the whole point of this movie.
