Greta Garbo stars in what many consider her greatest role, as the beautiful courtesan Marguerite Gautier, who is destroyed by her love for a young French nobleman, Armand (Robert Taylor). Despite having established a comfortable life as the consort of the Baron de Varville (Henry Daniell), Marguerite finds herself moved by the other's ardor and resolves to leave the baron. However, her newfound emotion raises conflicts, and to prove her love, she must sacrifice her own happiness. Marguerite is portrayed with supreme elegance by the Oscar-nominated Garbo in an opulent setting that is conjured masterfully by director Cukor. As Armand, Taylor gives a smoothly assured performance, and Daniell plays the baron with a subtle and charismatic menace. A truly classic visual spectacle, the film is sublime; the stunning black-and-white original is recommended viewing, although a colorized version also exists. [More]

  • Life in 1847 Paris is as spirited as champagne and as unforgiving as the gray morning after. In gambling dens and lavish soirees, men of means exert their wills and women turned courtesans exult in pleasure. One such woman is Marguerite Gautier (Greta Garbo), the Camille of this sumptuous romance tale based on the enduring Alexandre Dumas story.
  • Garbo's aloof mystique and alabaster beauty illuminate this George Cukor-directed film featuring what many call her finest performance. Her Camille is a movie paragon of true love found (in suitor Armand Duval, memorably played by Robert Taylor), then sacrificed for a greater good. Garbo earned an Academy Award nomination and the New York Film Critics Best Actress Award for her memorable work.

Dreadfully boring romance 'classic' has Garbo as a 1847's French courtesan, trapped in a loveless relationship with a rich man while forsaking her younger, hotter lover.

Solid, stolid, and not much fun. There are better Garbo films.

Miss Garbo has interpreted Marguerite Gautier with the subtlety that has earned for her the title, 'first lady of the screen.'
