"Day the Earth Stood Still" Remake Confirmed for 2008
by Alex Billington | February 22, 2007
Discuss Article
Box Office Mojo recently updated a release date listing for 2008 for a Fox produced "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake, and FirstShowing.net acquired confirmation from Fox that it is set to happen and will be released on May 9th, 2008, one week after Iron Man.

The original 1951 film is a sci-fi classic about an alien and a robot that land on Earth to try and save the world from being destroyed. No director or additional information has yet been announced, but is expected soon. Could we see a big time director helming this classic sci-fi remake - we'll see soon enough.

Actually, it this one is done right, it could be a pretty good remake. The original was a movie of its time with plenty of political message behind it. If this one favors that idea over mindless action, it could be pretty good.

Ah, who am I kidding?

100 bucks says that this time, the alien tries to save us from global warming. Seriously, global warming.

20 bucks says that the government will get their hands on gort or whatever the robot's name was, and accidentally reprogram it to kill, creating some "really awesome" scenes in the movie where the main characters must hunt it down and stop it from destroying the city.

I thought the premise is to prevent humans from taking their immature baggage into space plaguing other alien worlds. I'm looking forward to it. If it sucks then I'll blow it off or if I hate it, then I'll respect the original even more.

If it does focus on a human Earth problem I hope it's something that they see or predict will occur but humans have yet to comprehend. Something like Grey Goo. Again I think it'll be and should be about preventing humans from fucking shit up in space.

How about Klaatu says "I am your creator!" And watch the chaos begin.

yeah this movie depends on two things a director who cares about the materal and who are they going to get to replace the great Michael Rennie as Carpenter because if they get some no name or someone who will just make it a boring cheesy blockbuster I will go nuts. I think Clive Owen should be Carpenter and John Hurt as the professor and maybe natalie portman or keira knightley as Helen benson

If they simply want to update it for today's generation and make money, why not drop the idea of a remake, colorize it and hire Lucas to update the FX's. That would make more sense.
