Late one night she is attacked in her apartment by a would-be rapist whom she fatally stabs him in the back. Nightly revisited by a recurring dream of the incident, McNichol meets Michael Hansen (Ben Masters), a dream-researcher who promises to help her. McNichol's nightmarish evenings, however, only get worse. Masters claims that the actions in a dream state can be channeled into real but controlled actions, but his research isn't full-proof and he needs Kathy to step in as his guinea pig. The film explores the fascinating question that is posed when the dream state and the waking state are confused and intermingled. Bergman's longtime cinematographer Sven Nykvist provides a beautiful visual context to the scientific hypothesis. [More]
