It is not a major concept he is dramatizing, and it lacks the hallmarks of imagination, expressive symbolism and poetic nuances of some of the truly memorable films that followed Dreams.
Bergman's day-long, we-the-career-women saga places the shallow narcissism of youth along with the melancholy yearning of middle-age, or hope versus regret.
Lacks the gravitas of the director's more powerful latter psychological dramas but, nevertheless, shows-off his technical skills.
Scattered moments of rawness aside, the master of the spiritual crisis directs an unbalanced and uncharacteristically unconvincing melodrama.
This is not one of Ingmar Bergman's greats, but is a compelling film all the same.
