Accompanied by Susanne (Eva Dahlbeck), the head of a fashion photography studio, she travels to Göteborg for one day to take part in a fashion shoot. Here, Susanne seeks out a former lover (played by Ulf Palme) who has since married, while Doris is pursued by and becomes involved with a wealthy older man (Gunnar Björnstrand). In their hearts, both women desire a meaningful relationship, and each comes to realize there is little satisfaction in brief erotic diversions when confronted with the harsh reality of their lovers' respective deficiencies. Director Ingmar Bergman traces the process of disillusionment with irony and precision but depicts his heroines' plight with a sympathetic eye at all times. This analytical romantic drama arguably represents Bergman's transition from his early work to his more mature period; it would be followed by the lyrical comedy of manners SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, his first great international success.
