Cronenberg Seeks The Talking Cure

Tired of remakes, sequels, and videogame/comic book adaptations? David Cronenberg's next project might be of interest to you. Particularly if you have a degree in psychiatry.

ScreenDaily reports that for his next film, Cronenberg will be adapting Christopher Hampton's play The Talking Cure, which takes a look at the collaboration between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. From the article:

The Talking Cure follows the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, and their complicated relationships with a brilliant and beautiful patient, Sabina Spielrein.

Jung and Freud's theories went on to influence differing schools of psychiatric thought, but for roughly nine years, the duo's regular correspondence proved influential for both men. Hampton's play originally ran in London, where Ralph Fiennes played Jung.

According to ScreenDaily's report, no cast is confirmed for the film, which will be produced by Jeremy Thomas. Cronenberg, currently working on an opera version of The Fly, is scheduled to start working on The Talking Cure in mid-2008, at which point -- wait, did someone just say opera version of The Fly?

This is odd. I watched The Fly for the very first time this weekend and on the commentary track David Cronenberg did mention the operatic nature of some parts of the film score and indeed the plans for a Fly opera. Most of the movie takes place in one room anyway, so why not?

Considering that Cronenberg has a doctorate in Psychology this must be his dream passion project. All of his films are seeded with psychological ideas- look at Spider, The Fly, History of Violence, Crash, even Existenz. It probably took his navigation into the mainstream, with Eastern Promises, to finally get this project in the works.

A doctorate in psychology? I don't think so. A degree in Literature/english from the University of Toronto, and a year of science courses.
