Rene Clement's 1944 adaptation of Francois Boyer's novel is an exquisitely unsentimental movie about the corruptive effect of war on children.
Taken aback by the ending, and wondered why it would end that way. We've been conditioned to expect happy endings for everything, yet it was riveting throughout. Very sad. Nothing left to say except that this was a strong statement about the horrors of war and the arbitrary nature of parental discipline.
