A blistering adult western which broke ground in its depiction of an unglamorous West and in the decidedly anti-heroic nature of its lead.

Set on a Texas ranch where Cadillacs, cattle, and transistor radios coexist uneasily, the film stars Paul Newman as the hedonistic, arrogant, and rebellious farmhand Hud Bannon. Hud is constantly at odds with his kind father Homer (Melvyn Douglas), who blames him for the death of his brother. Hud further strains their relationship when he begins taking his nephew out drinking and chasing women. But when it appears that Homer's herd of cattle may have contracted hoof-and-mouth disease, he asks his son's help and advice. Predictably, Homer and Hud disagree about what should be done with the cattle, so Hud tries to gain ownership of the ranch--which could mean taking away his father's sole possession and livelihood. Beautifully photographed, the film has a clean visual style, emphasizing both the open spaces of the Texan landscape and the Cadillacs and Dr. Pepper signs that adorn it. Patricia Neal won an oscar for her role, and Newman's performance gives the film its wit and considerable velocity; his character, Hud, is morally reprehensible but still likeable and charismatic, and he carries the film forward to its surprising and poignant ending. Reviews for Hud
The four principal actors -- Newman, Neal, Douglas, and de Wilde -- are so good that they might well form the nucleus of a cinematic repertory company.
Built around a huge performance by Newman this is an immensely powerful character piece, intelligently written and visually striking throughout.
Paul Newman established himself as a superstar in this uncompromising antihero role.
Violating the ethos of the Producion Code, Hud, Martin Ritt's best film, featured such forbidden words as bastard and son of a *****, heard for the first time in American movies, thus signaling the decline and ultimate demise of the Code.
James Wong Howe won the film's third Oscar for his beautiful widescreen, black-and-white, wide-open-spaces cinematography, but director Martin Ritt (who was nominated) keeps things a bit too serious and self-important.
These questions are richer than they might have been in Hud because Newman...creates Hud as a sum of conscious choices, not an animal or an icon.
Ultimately, a heartbreaking film that refuses to take the easy, happy route of life.
Martin Ritt directed, putting a little too much dust in the dust bowl for my taste.
More or less plays out as a home-on-the-range knock-off of Nicolas Ray’s brilliant Rebel Without a Cause.
