Screen idol James Dean lives fast and dies young in this made-for-television feature based on the memoirs of Dean's college roommate William Bast. The biopic chronicles the life of Dean (Stephen McHattie) from his days as an acting student at UCLA to his angst-ridden performances in television and movies and the dangerous sport that led to his untimely death. The first thing that struck me about this movie was the complete lack of period detail. It is so obviously made in 1976, the womens hairstyles etc. I wasn't convinced by any of the movie. The acting wasn't particularly good. I don't feel it captured the essence of James Dean. It is just such an obvious television made
