The individual lives of Julia and Hellman are well handled, but it's the relationship between the two women which makes this such great cinema.

Reviews for Julia
Lillian Hellman's tight autobiographical story about memory and friendship gets the full Zinnemann gloss-wash.
Beautifully crafted, nominated for nine Academy Awards, a big hit at the box office -- and a dramatic dud.
An understatedly suspenseful drama with both Fonda and Redgrave giving impassioned performances.
The film has star appeal and gossip appeal, and the disc's soundtrack makes viewing it worthwhile, but sometimes you want to reach through the screen, reach through characters, reach through the words, reach through every layer of artistic endeavor, and s
Hansomely mounted but superficially written and directed, Julia lacks dramatic focus, a result of confusion as to what exactly Lillian Hellman's memory text is about and also too many jumps in the story's timeframe, with flashbacks within flashbacks.
Julia gives us a genuine and affecting portrait of a friendship between two women who confirm each other and strengthen their bonds over the years.
We realize as the film closes that we are in no better position than we were at the beginning to fill in that opaque silhouette of Lillian Hellman.
Um dos mistérios do Oscar, que, além de premiar uma atuação banal de Robards, indicou este filme apenas mediano em 10 outras categorias. Marcou a estréia de Streep nas telas.
